Marie Léa Regales was born in Paris in 1993. After a few years studying editing, she directed her first shortfilm, Les Sirènes (Mermaids), produced by the G.R.E.C. and the I.U.T. of Corsica. She is curently working on a new shortfilm, La vie sur mars (Life on Mars).
Les Sirènes (Mermaids) is my first shortfilm.
This short was born with the strong desire of capturing the intensity and complexity of teenage year. I wanted to create strong female characters.
The film is all about the empowerment of a young girl who decides to be the only master of hey own body. In France, where the film was shot, abortion is legal, but still a sensitive subject. Les Sirènes does not aim to be a political film, even if its subject is political, but more a personal journey, in a very intimate setting: the girls are alone, there are no boyfriends, no parents, no authority. The girl's decision is hers, and hers alone. My body, my choice. The film is also about responsibility, and how when you're a girl, your freedom can stop at anytime.
I guess the film is about learning to become a women, and the empowerment that comes with taking your own life choices by yourself.
