I am just freshly out of a French cinema school in paris « La Conservatoire Libre du Cinéma Français » where I studied editing and directing. I am originally from Wales and moved to France at a young age. I was lucky enough to grow up in the country side in Brittany were my love for films blossomed. Cinema and television have been a part of my life from a very young age. I spent most of my time trying to borrow my dad’s old video camera and when I failed to steal it away, I used our webcam to make documentaries.
As I got older, I was told I had to make a choice, a choice that was potentially going to change my life. That choice was « What I wanted to do when I grew up ? » . It wasn’t the easiest question to answer because making films was not on the list of jobs most people choose to do. I knew I loved to create, to analyse people around me, to watch people reactions and of course I loved looking at all the beauty that was around me.
Cinema and television fascinated me, it had the power through it’s stories, editing, costumes, lighting, images, music… to make someone laugh, cry, get angry… and to feel completely connected to a person they had never even met. I knew that I wanted to one day be able to do the same thing, to make someone react with my creations. To be connected to people though films, I find that just incredible.
I started making little films with friends while in lycée ( 15 to 18 years old school ), and as time went on I got to work on bigger projets with my school in Paris and on other peoples short films. I have be able to work as a runner, an assistant director, editor and all those experiences only showed me how much I love working in this industry and that I did make the right choice all those years ago. Of course there have been ups and downs, times when I had to push myself to believe I could do it, like most people in this line of work. Now I am happy to say that in my last year of school, with the help of crowdfunding, I managed to make my first professional short film with an amazing team filled with students. We still have so much to learn and I for one can’t wait to keep creating and keep learning !
The idea for Les Frères came about from two needs. Firstly I needed to start writing again, after a year of only editing, the need to write and direct was screaming at me to make something. The second need would be my team, we were all students and wanted to put our newly learned skills to the test.
I have always been interested in family dynamics and most of all family secrets. I wanted to show how not talking and not communicating can create huge divides in a family. I worked with my writers to make four very distinct characters, that all lived through the same events in different ways.
I can only hope that the audience, after seeing Les Frères, wants to know more and wants to see what is going to happen to these four brothers. In a way, I would like them to feel like they are a part of this family and have a new need to discover all the family secrets for themselves.
