Le père

When Z is painting, the world makes sense. In her studio, with her paintings, brushes and canvas, it all comes together and she doesn't need anything else.
People in her life have negative connotations; her controlling mother is always talking about her more successful younger sister, an abusive ex-boyfriend doesn't want to let go of their relationship, and a distant friend won't stop bothering her. As time passes she tries to distance herself from them by escaping into art.
However a man from her painting comes alive and goes on a killing spree of her closed ones. Is she his final victim or is he just helping her? How long is it going to take her to realize what is happening and how can she stop it?

Director Statement

The question whether focusing only on work/art is an escape or life itself, is something I reflect upon everyday. What is the right balance ? If I’m passionate about something, shouldn’t I follow it as much as possible ? When does it become an obstacle or a barrier for everything else in life ? What is life without doing what I love ?
I try to explore these questions in the film and when I combine it with my interest in psychology and surrealism, it has become a study of an introverted girl who immerses herself completely into her passion for painting. However excess is never good and especially when taken as a pseudo-solution to her problems.
The film is very subjective to the main character. All her interactions with the outside world, including all the people in her life are through her eyes very disrupting, fragmented and exaggerated.
The surrealism is slight, but enforced by the editing and the blocking of the space. As a personal expression, I’m thrilled to hear the viewers’ opinions and what they took from the film. At the end it couldn’t be done without the team of super talented people of which I’m very proud.
