Legend: A-lu Dai
To promote the public’s awareness of Hakka cultural assets, and pass on Hakka culture and spirit, this documentary series showcases the ecology of all walks of life and the cultural works of Hakka ethnicity in Taiwan, by recording the traditional Hakka skills and craftsmen’s selfless and silent contributions in a sustainable manner.
In this episode, the protagonist, Master Dai A-Lu, entered the trade as a bamboo furniture apprentice at age 14 in Hankeng, Guanxi. Two years later, he started his own workshop specializing in bamboo products in Fugang. Today, as an old hand of bamboo craftsmanship of 86 (2020), he is still working in the trade. Although a man of few words, uncle A-Lu always extends greetings to neighbors and friends who happen to pass by the shop and joyfully engage in idle chats with them.
The craftsmanship he has accumulated over the span of 60 years, is completely recorded by a series of delicate film production procedure. Following the beats and the ups and downs of the rhythms, master Dai displays his expertise in the production process. Gradually, a finished work of art is meticulously carved out through his impeccable techniques.
During the shooting process, not even a single minor flaw is neglected and rework is executed! Dai insists that every work be perfectly made with all his sincerity, hoping that those who bring it back will utilize it with peace of mind in the long run.
The linage of the traditional crafts is another topic touched upon in the interview. This allows the audience to appreciate and feel the disappearing of a time-honored craft on the long river of time. Hopefully, they will cherish it more and even offer substantial support by passing on the Hakka furniture in their homes.

From past shooting experience, she is especially interested in people or things with cultural characteristics regardless of the forms of programs. In 2003, her production, “History of Taiwan”, with the Hakka TV Station, was shortlisted in the “Educational and Cultural Contributions Award” category of Taiwan’s Golden Bell Awards. As a Hakka, she hopes to be able to inject more Hakka spirit into different kinds of programs.
In 2011, she participated in TLC’s reality show “Fun Taiwan Challenge”. In designing the program’s competition game content, apart from Taiwan’s featured activities, she also incorporated traditional Hakka festival competitions.
The declining Hakka art and skills are fully presented in detail within the program’s limited airtime, just like appreciating every piece of Hakka artwork.
