La Peste originated from a simple yet powerful image: a child helping his blind father cross the street. This scene made me reflect on blindness, both literal and metaphorical, and how this theme could be explored in horror. I delved into the complex relationship between a father and his son, where Gustavo represents the collective blindness of a society that chooses not to see the atrocities happening around it. The repression within the home mirrors the social repression during the dictatorship, where silence becomes a form of survival. The actions of the rats serve as a metaphor for nature’s revenge against human cruelty. We aimed to create an oppressive atmosphere, delicately using silence, lighting, and set design to highlight the coldness of the context. Inspired by Lovecraft and Guillermo del Toro, the almost paranormal is integrated to invite the viewer to a deep reflection on the personal and social horrors that still affect us.
