Writer Biography - Ella Dove

My name is Ella Dove. I have had a passion for film editing and directing for 8 years. All my films revolve around a deep connection to music. I always try to incorporate music and film. My ultimate goal as a filmmaker is to show young women that they can succeed in a male-dominated industry. I grew up with all my favorite directors being men and that never deterred me from doing what I love and I hope to show young women and girls watching films now that they too can be in the directing chair.

Writer Statement

When I first heard the song “Kokomo” by the beach boys I was moved. The piece of music is about escaping yourself and thoughts and finding a peaceful paradise. A place where you can let go. As a teenager who as always wanted to move, explore, and grow up this hit deep with me and gave me inspiration for this story. The story is told from a biased point of view. The mother is telling the world through the news about her missing daughter. In a sense you (the audience) watching/reading this are the people the mother is trying to reach in this story and it is up to you to determine what is real and what is not. I wanted to create tension between the mother and daughter without them ever talking to each other. They create a battle between their stories and how they captivate the audience without actually being in the same room. The mother has mental issues you can feel that by the way, she gets confused and the audio is muffled and it gets bright as well as her medicine is shown in the script. Her way of getting out of her troubles and letting go is by abusing her daughter ultimately causing her daughter a life of pain, suffering, and entrapment. The daughter’s feeling of entrapment stems directly from her mother's “paradise” if you will, and she needs to find peace and leave. The characters throughout the story grow apart while physically coming together. The things the mother remembers about her daughter the things that show her empathy for her daughter missing are the resources her daughter was using to get away from her mother for so many years. This causes their relationship to become distant making it increasingly worse for Karla’s situation. However, in the end, Karla plans to see her mother one last time as her final goodbye to show how she escaped her abusive mother. In the end, this story is about a relationship between a mother and daughter who have grown apart, and also a coming of age story for teenagers growing their own roots and becoming adults.
