Michael Mews (formerly Ciesielski) is a German director and screenwriter from Saxony-Anhalt. He worked as a cameraman for film and television before studying directing at the University of Television and Film Munich. There he was nominated for the German Short Film Award and won the City of Munich's "Starter Prize" early on, which honours the most promising young directors.
Michael is currently preparing his debut film and is developing a comedy series about the post-reunification period in East Germany.
When Moritz told me this story, it ended with the words: "I think that was the night we grew up."
"Kitten" is based on a true story that captivated me from the very first moment. Two boys go away alone for the first time after leaving school. After finding the badly injured cat, they realise that it won't survive until the next morning. They realise that there is no vet for miles around.
I was immediately interested in the topics of euthanasia and growing up in this story. I think everyone remembers their first encounter with death. It resonates and works within us. This is about a living being that cannot give its consent. So who bears the responsibility? And where are the boundaries between euthanasia and cruelty to animals?
