Jack McLoughlin is a writer, director and producer based in Liverpool, England. Making films since he was a child, when he was 14 his short film Chupacabra won the Freehand Talent Award at FACT's Young Person Cinema Night. In 2015, Jack's film Victims won the Vesbim Award at the Liverpool International Film Festival. Modern Lennon, a film which he also directed, was shown as part of Hurricane Films' (Of Time and The City, Sunset Song, A Prayer Before Dawn) Sgt Pepper's at 50 Celebration in the prestigious Woolton Picture House. Jack’s most recent short film; Bud, was selected as part of the BFI Future Film Festival and streamed on the BFI Player throughout Spring, 2022. His script for the film earned him a nomination for Best Writer at the event too.
In 2021, Jack directed his debut feature film Kate & Jake. He's worked on professional sets as a floor runner on shows such as Peaky Blinders and Danny Boyle's film Yesterday. He has also shadowed Directors Ben Wheatley and Philip Barantini, the latter of which he was also the assistant for on his BIFA-winning and BAFTA-nominated feature film Boiling Point starring Stephen Graham.
I wanted to create a film that explores relationships between young people, which can be joyous but also gruelling and heartbreaking too.
In Kate & Jake we explore both, including the harsh reality of a relationship ageing over time. This story is also about post graduate life for university students, which is rarely explored within film, and how that affects the characters financially and mentally. Which, in turn, is also why the film is about heartbreak and grief to which I have personal experience with. The aim is to also show working class life, which is often depicted as poverty stricken and grim. Indeed there is some truth to that, however, in the film we want to show the sense of togetherness, laughter and harmony which is what the community is truly about. At the core what the film is about is a love story between Kate & Jake. Their love and affection for each other is the film's drive and true purpose.
