Kaelo Iyizoba is a Nigerian-American Filmmaker based in New York. He holds a Master's of fine art in film from Columbia University, where he graduated with honors. He was a practicing pharmacist before he found his voice through film. Like many of the people of his region in Nigeria, Kaelo considers himself a trader, but his merchandise is empathy.
Kaelo was cited by Buzzfeed as an upcoming black filmmaker shaping the future of the industry. He made history at Columbia University by becoming the first producer to win top honors in both producing and screenwriting. He is a winner of the Arthur Krim award for excellence in producing. His teleplay, “II” received a Faculty Selects, the highest scriptwriting honor at Columbia and won the Lisa Rubin teleplay award. Kaelo is a Blackhouse-Meta fellow, and a Facebook SEEN future filmmaker grant recipient.
Kaelo's first narrative short film "Boy meets girl" won the award for Outstanding experimental film at the 2021 Abuja International Film Festival. His following short film "Nkemefuna" premiered at the 2022 Phoenix film festival and was subsequently screened at the Lincoln center as part of the New York African Film Festival. “Enloquecer”, a short film he produced, screened at Palm Springs shortfest and was selected as a Vimeo staff pick.
He is currently developing his first feature film, “A Nollywood Story” which will be presented at Berlinale Talents Durban 2023.
