Director Statement

"DAMSEL" is the story of a knight's happily-ever-after gone horribly wrong, blending fantasy/adventure elements with a dark modern style of comedy, as a way to explore some of the questionable elements associated with a genre that I fell in love with early on in my childhood. There were no bigger influences during my first decade of life than movies like "Willow" and "Princess Bride", but really was a sucker for anything that had to do with hero's, sword fights, and happily ever after's. As I grew older my relationship with these types of stories changed, but their initial influence will always be a part of my relationship with movies and plays a big part in the type of filmmaker I strive to be, which is what led me to tell a story celebrating this genre, but accomplished in a unique way that can represent my updated perspective on these stories and allows us to explore some of the problematic elements of the genre.

This is a story that begins where the action movie version would end. Our hero rides off into the sunset with his damsel (no longer in distress) towards their "happily ever after" with only the journey home standing in the way. This is when things take an unexpected turn, as our hero discovers his bride-to-be is unlike anyone he's ever met before and couldn't be more wrong for each other. By design, our Damsel goes against everything we've come to expect from these types of character tropes and our hero finds himself outmatched. The idea of a lifetime bound together with this Princess becomes a lifetime sentence, now the roles reverse and prisoner to his opponent whom he is greatly outmatched, as he realizes that achieving the one thing he has worked his whole life for will be his downfall if he doesn't act fast becoming a lifetime prisoner to his damsel and the fate of their happily ever after.

A knight is nothing without his morals, but our hero finds himself pushed to the edge where this moral code has to be questioned asking himself what's truly important in life. he begins to question everything, what is truly important. and the fate of the very thing this knight has spent his entire life working for is now the one thing holding him prisoner, forcing him to question his own moral code and reevaluate what's important in life before it's too late to escape his "happily-ever-after" and a lifetime of inevitable distress at the hands of the damsel - our hero's greatest adversary yet.
