In the Making

When five best friends are trying to make it into the cutthroat entertainment industry, one will have to exploit the others in order to succeed.

Aaron (22, journalist) is our season one exploiter. Student by day, bartender by night at Starr Bar — the notorious hang out spot for his friend group. After he begins junior year in his new journalism major, he turns in a well received assignment detailing the secrets and exploitations of his friends (the female director, the broadway major, the music artist, and the music manager) trying to make it in their respective fields. His professor convinces him to help boost sales of the school’s dying newspaper by revitalizing the 2000s gossip craze with his column: In the Making. Over the course of the season, we’ll vicariously follow the scandalous ways his friends try to “make it” in their respective industries through his writings. He’ll use Starr Bar to his advantage by getting his friends drunk enough to spill their truths… until the real truth about him gets out.

Director Biography - Alexandria Hellman

Alexandria Hellman is an award winning African American and Jewish producer with a BFA from NYU Tisch School of the Arts for Film & TV, and a minor in BEMT (Business, Entertainment, Media & Technology). She created her first hour long film at sixteen that screened at NBC Universal in 2017, and has since then produced several shorts, proof-of-concepts, and feature length films from New York to Alaska. In 2019, she founded Studio16: an independent production company focused on making high production value films that amplify underrepresented voices. During her 2022 gap year, she discovered a love for post-production sound and is now a certified audio engineer. Post graduate, Alexandria continues to produce independent films under her company, and supervises post production sound until transitioning back into writing and directing.

Director Statement

Throughout my years at NYU, I experienced the confusing and trivializing times of finding myself while being displaced in the big city, surrounded by a fast-paced lifestyle and vicious competition. Now, as I navigate life after college with a degree in the arts, “In the Making” seeks to depict the real experience of an early twenty-something college student navigating life in an authentic and relatable way.

“In the Making” also showcases all sorts of college experiences: The consistent four year-er, the major switch-er, the drop out, the leave of absence, the study abroad… As well as those who have to work part time, don’t work at all, or live off of a trust fund.
