Inkarna
Long time ago, the world was formless until the Creator created Light and Darkness. Thus, came the existence of Barong and Rangda, the ruler of Life and Destructor. They were known as ‘Inkarna’.
Slowly realizing a terrifying power, Rangda accidentally killed a baby boar. She ran to the world of Death and decided to stay there. Meanwhile, Barong believed that they were created to bring balance in the world and his love towards Rangda could stabilize her power. Barong witnessed the rebirth of the boar, then they went to the world of death to bring Rangda back to home.

Ivana Sari studies animation at Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN) in Indonesia.
'Inkarna' is her debut of 3D animation film with her teammates from Candramawa Production. It has won 'The Best Story' award in UMN Screening Day and has been nominated for AFI, ISFF, Hellofest, and TFF Award in the 'Best Short Animation' category.
Curently, she has finished her study and produced a short 2D animation film, 'Batang Garing', for the final project with her teammates from Myopia Production. The film has been selected in several festivals such as CIFF, 21 Islands International Short Film Fest, UCIFEST, AYIFF, and top 50 finalist in ISFF SCTV 2018.
Bali is one of the islands and provinces in my country, Indonesia, which is well-known as a cultural tourism destination in the world. Last year in July, I spent my holiday there which is also known as Island of Devata or Island of Gods. During my stay, I started a project which characters were from Indonesian culture, one of them were Barong and Rangda, the king of good spirit and the queen of destruction from Balinese mythology. Since I was in Bali, I studied both figures in the actual venue of the culture.
After studying the two characters, I discovered how interesting Barong and Rangda were and decided to develop a story about them. This was how the concept of the animated film ‘Inkarna’ started. ‘Inkarna’ is taken from Indonesian word ‘Inkarnasi’ which means incarnation. Barong, the king of good spirit in Balinese mythology became the Inkarna of Light. Meanwhile, Rangda, the queen of spirit of destruction became the Inkarna of Dark. From this animation, I’d like to introduce Balinese version of ‘yin and yang’ characters to the world, the Barong and Rangda.
