61!
Turkey, the 1980s, Adem is wheeled away on a stretcher, semiconscious and ranting, ‘Soda... Soda...’ at a prison...
Flashback to 1970s. Adem is a clever and diligent boy living with his family in one of those Aegean villages blessed with peace and tranquility. With the love of soda, Adem asks his parents if he can work for the soda vendor ‘Cibar Kemal Usta’ instead of going to the tobacco fields with his family. After a little discussion, his parents allow him to work, and Adem starts as Cibar Kemal’s apprentice.
Just before Ramadan, Adem becomes very impressed with the Hodja’s sermon about fasting at the village’s mosque. In addition to this, Berna, his childhood crush will also be fasting alongside adults. But his parents, his soda master Cibar Kemal and his role model “leftist” Hasan opposes him to fast, because he is so young and the weather is so hot. But Adem secretly takes a vow. Furthermore, it’s not an easy task to fast under scorching Aegean sun while trying to sell soda. Especially after learning that to break the fast intentionally would require an additional 61 days of fasting as a penance, and that his crush was fasting for only a day, not for the whole month of Ramadan! Thirst and hunger wear Adem down and the day becomes a real challenge. How will this ordeal end for Adem and his master Cibar Kemal? And why he still wanders soda at a prison ten years later?
