Banipreet is Sydney bred singer-songwriter. Raised in the south-western region of Sydney, she grew up singing 16th century hymns at the local Sikh Temple. While her connection to North India, The Punjab, remained strong, her western identity invited an appetite of pop culture, hip hop beats, and jazz melodies that resulted in her studying a Bachelor of Visual Arts at the University of Sydney. In her late teens, she explored Indian Classical Music, understanding music at its most fundamental - rhythm, breath, practise, and story - while submerging herself in cultural artistry from the west. Banipreet’s sound blends these two identities from the east and west. Her song-writing is the purest form of her identity.
‘Incredible,’ her debut single, is an internal dialogue with the self. Banipreet wanted the first lyrics of her music catalogue be, ‘this pocket of pain you own, lease it now, you know it’s only there on loan.’ It sets the sound of hope, journey, and churning pain into joy. Its official music video released on her YouTube channel, showcases a story around and in a home, acting as a metaphor for her mind and its busyness, in a process to heal a wound with a burning ceremony. It’s her journey of loss and revival.
I woke up one morning in a tiny house on a Summer morning, heartbroken. I ate yesterday's leftover penne arrabiatta, I read to pass time and I wrote in my journal. I thought to myself, one day, I will come back to this tinyhouse and record my first ever music video. I will document my story of how I rose through the pain. Three years later, I released 'Incredible,' my debut song and music video.
