Each entry must be sponsored by an adult (teacher, parent, guardian, extra-curricular adviser, etc.). Projects can be submitted on behalf of a classroom, class project, or individual student. All communication will be sent to the sponsoring adult responsible for the entry.
For each entry you will need to state the instructional objectives and/or standards addressed by the project.
For every classroom project, please submit only the “best” one to iVIE for consideration. In other words, if your students are creating similar projects on photosynthesis, please submit only one project to iVIE 2023.
Enter a project only once. Submissions may not have been entered previously to the iVIE Festival. The iVIE Awards are limited to amateur video endeavors of students and teachers. Videos commissioned for profit may not be entered.
This is a student film competition. It is accepted that primary grade teachers will be very involved in video production and editing, however it is expected that students participate in all parts of the process. At the intermediate and secondary levels, it is expected that students create the video with teacher guidance and approval only.
Save a complete, high-resolution copy of your project, as this is required for all nominated projects.
Entries must represent work that was completed after April 2022 of the previous year and up until upcoming April 2023 deadline. See time limits per entry category below.
Please be sure you have permission on file for all of the students featured in your project. It will be your responsibility to upload forms releasing student likeness with submission.

Entries will be judged with respect to their specific grade level. The grade level groupings include: Grades K-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12. There will be one winning entry per age group per category. Once again iVIE will encourage students to explore different genres and themes via the many award categories.

Create a 1-2 minute video about the reasons why we should love electric vehicles (EVs). See our reference sheet for useful information on EVs. Don’t have access to an EV? Not a problem. Just use your creativity to explain the benefits of an Electric Vehicle.
Short Narrative (Live Action) (Grades K-12)
Short narrative films on any topic or style that are not covered in any category below. Areas may include, but are not limited to: humanities, history, literature, religion, language, art, music, experimental film, philosophy, sociopolitical or personal stories. Entries must be 7 minutes or less.
Short Narrative (Animation) (Grades K-12)
Short narrative films on any topic or style that are not covered in any category below. Areas may include, but are not limited to: humanities, history, literature, religion, language, art, music, experimental film, philosophy, sociopolitical or personal stories. Entries must be 7 minutes or less and animated.
PSA (Public Service Announcement) (Grades K-12)
A 30-60 second video that raises public awareness around any issue. Issues can vary, but we suggest themes such as climate change, overcoming addiction, digital citizenship, cyberbullying, social media safety, and participating responsibly in our digital world. Entries must be 60 seconds or less.
DIY (Do It Yourself) (Grades K-12)
Inspire others and give them the “How-to” skills. Teach, fix something, solve, make, cook, and be creative. Healthy DIY challenges are welcome. Entries must be 3 minutes or less.
Diversity and Inclusion (Grades K-12)
Tell a story celebrating San Diego County's rich cultural, ethnic, racial, LGBTQ+ diversity. Videos can be bilingual and/or can tell a story in a language other than English that illustrates a unique aspect of the culture/community where that language is spoken. Must include English subtitles if film is in a language other than English. Entries must be 5 minutes or less.
News Story (Grades K-12)
A single nonfiction story about current events and/or issues important to a community. Please submit only the segment you want judged, not an entire newscast. Entries must be 5 minutes or less.
Documentary (Live Action) (Grades K-12)
Use video, pictures, or interviews with people involved in real events to provide a factual record or report. Entries must be 5 minutes or less.
Documentary (Animation) (Grades K-12)

STEAM (Grades K-12)
A film whose theme illustrates real-world applications of science, technology, engineering, arts, and/or mathematics. The film can include one or more STEAM topics. It can be documentary or short narrative style. Entries must be 3 minutes or less.

Inspire and encourage a new generation to have a positive impact on the planet and those around them. Feel empowered to use social media for progressive change! VIdeos must be 1 minute in length.
Music Video (Grades K-12)
Create a music video for an original musical work or a sound recording. Submitters must have explicit authorization to use the song in music video format and may not be in violation of any copyright infringement. We encourage submitters to be the producers of the musical work or sound recording, or use songs from the public domain! Song lyrics may not contain profanity, hate speech, or derogatory statements. Lyrics must be submitted for approval. Entries must be 3-4 minutes or less. We encourage educators to review the following resource for guidelines on copyrights and fair use.
