Hidden Light marks the debut feature film of Australian filmmaker, Aaron Kamp.
Aaron's love of filmmaking began at an early age. In 1993, seeing people queued for blocks to see Jurassic Park - he realised the power of cinema. Aaron went on to study Film & Television at Curtin University in Western Australia, following which we began working in the corporate & event video world.
After working as a Cinematographer for a number of years, Aaron made the leap into directing with his short 'Never Too Late'. Produced as part of the 2013 168 Film Project, 'Never Too Late' went on to be named one of the top 20 finalists, and had it's world premiere in Los Angeles. Aaron continued to make short films, with 'Stuck', 'The Artifact' & 'Caged In' all screening at numerous festivals throughout the world, and winning several awards.
Now with 'Hidden Light', Aaron has made the leap into the feature film world, hoping to continue his success on the road to long and sustained career.
Despite having moments of action sprinkled throughout the film, at it's heart, Hidden Light is a character driven drama that follows the stories of three men, who are each at turning point in their lives.
In developing the style of this film, I was heavily influenced by Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu's early work - in particular Amores Perros, 21 Grams and most notably, Biutiful. I adopted a handheld approach to the camera and shot 98% of the film on long lenses -(There is only a handful of shots that were filmed on a lens wider than 50mm). The reason for this is that I want the audience to feel like they are watching on, observing these characters as they go through this pivotal moment in their lives.
Light, and the absence of light, is also an important theme in the film, so we never wanted to film anything too bright. For the most part, we have a dark, brooding atmosphere for the film - which reflects where the characters are at.
The end result is a film that has a distinct style that I hope will draw the audience in and enable them to connect with the characters on screen.
