Andrew Jonathan Smith is a British writer and director. He honed his skill for moving image while working under world-renowned Fashion Photographer, Nick Knight, for nearly a decade and was one of the creative leads behind the viral sensation, #INTRODUCTIONS, a collaborative work with the artist trio, LaBeouf, Rönkkö & Turner. Videos he has written and directed have been shown in museum exhibitions and film festivals around the globe. He has a Fine Art degree from Central Saint Martins, London and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
The first time I read about someone who had been declared legally dead, I thought it was such a blistering indictment on the nature of modern bureaucracy that it bordered on satyrical. Then I realized this was a shockingly common phenomena. As I uncovered how much of our lives is predicated on us being alive on paper, I couldn’t help but turn it into a story.
As an immigrant, I have found myself many times caught in between two bureaucratic systems that can fail to overlap: I often receive jury duty summons in a country where I am not a citizen, I keep a box of wedding cards under my bed to prove to various governments that my marriage is real, and I was once charged at a hospital for morphine when I only took an aspirin. These systems are built to fit 99.9% of people, but when a person becomes an outlier, all kinds of chaos can ensure, and sometimes you just have to find the humor in the midst of that mayhem.
