Director Biography - Jennifer Simms

Jennifer Simms is a writer and filmmaker from Auckland, New Zealand. She spent a few years based in England, travelling around Europe and Africa creating personal content for her YouTube channel as well as producing some promotional videos for tourism companies. This led to Jennifer becoming one of the finalists for the Discovery Channel Internship Competition in 2018.

After returning to Aotearoa, she has completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Auckland double majoring in Film, Media & Television and Sociology. During this time, she took part in an exchange program in Seattle at the University of Washington, where she immersed herself in film clubs and had the opportunity to direct her short film ‘Would You Rather’.

She has recently graduated with an overall A+ grade from South Seas Film School, where she majored in Drama Directing and Screenwriting. 'Glimmers' was her final project and creating it was a highlight of her year. At South Seas she gained experience making short films, a web series, music videos and documentaries and is eager to expand on her knowledge with every project that comes her way. She is a member of both the Women in Film and Television Guild (WIFT) and the NZ Writer's Guild (NZWG). Jennifer is now employed as a script supervisor at South Pacific Pictures, working on the popular, long running soap, 'Shortland Street'.

Director Statement

The idea behind 'Glimmers' is very close to my heart. It came from watching my friends go through similar things, as well as my own experiences with an emotionally manipulative relationship. It explores the reasons why people settle for less than they deserve: from being young and having false ideas of what love should look like or be, to societal expectations, media influences or familial role models. There are so many contributing factors and not enough discussion on how to get out of these toxic situations.

My aim was always to express these emotions through short breaks in reality as I think the fantasy aspect often evokes more empathy by giving an intense and visceral look into the character's innermost thoughts and feelings. My wish is that ‘Glimmers’ leaves audiences with a sense of hope, catharsis and empowerment through the message that developing self-love is far more important than compromising yourself for romantic love.
