A piece of meat
A piece of meat is a boxing drama inspired by Jack London's short story.
In the 2000’s, an aging boxer in the shabby suburbs of Budapest fights one last illegal match to provide for his sons. Lajos, who is recently divorced from his wife, is about to leave for the match when his children beg him to carry them to the late-night event. In the end, he loses the match, but his character remains intact in the eyes of his sons.
The deprived classes living on the breadline have been dragged down in a spiral not only by the insecurity of the Hungarian post-change regime, but also by the global economic crisis of the 2000’s. Our film is about a common situation of poverty: the conflict of reconciling work and family. On numerous occasions this escalates into an irresolvable conflict. The film argues for the moral victory of the poor man, who chooses to support his family and his children rather than sacrifice his humanity on the altar of success and money.
The film is about the difficulties of fatherhood and family care. For Lajos, winning the game and making money is not the most important thing to achieve, but being a role model for his sons. However this constantly contradicts the fact that this is not what his sons need most at this point. A piece of meat is not only a hard-hitting boxing film, but also an uplifting story of fatherly and brotherly love.
