Director Statement

With 'From Zero to One' my goal was to create a kind of art that is rarely done anymore, a kind of storytelling that is truly ceremonial and symbolical, from beginning to end.

It's unconcerned with the lesser aspects of humanity, but rather aspires to invite the audience's imagination to consider the great beauty of the world within us, and plant the first seeds of curiosity that might hopefully compel others to explore the limits of their human experience too, in life and in art.

It was made on a budget of zero dollars, fully animated and scored by me, not merely as a feat of artistic determination but to also prove that these things can be done. The medium of pixel art animation is used due to love for the art style, not as a gimmick but as an exploration of what I believe to be a valid form. The neoromantic score, created using primitive audio sampling and oscillators, helps with marrying the different episodes, from station to station, as a whole vision.

And beyond the symbolism, I just hope this film presents itself to people as a series of visual wonders, all seen with the heart. If it proves beautiful to most, then it was all worth the effort.
