Director Biography - Patricia Martínez

Patricia Martinez

She is an active Argentinean/Spanish composer, improviser, pianist, art researcher and interdisciplinary artist born in 1973. She holds a Doctoral and a Master degree in Music Composition from Stanford University and Brian Ferneyhough was her advisor. She studied at the Municipal Conservatory of Buenos Aires, Quilmes University and she was the youngest composer completing the Annual Course in Computer Music (IRCAM, 1996/97). She created and conducted the Seminar on composition and multidisciplinary creation at the Quilmes University (2014) and she taught composition at Stanford University; National Conservatory of Lima, University of Costa Rica, Collegium Musicum and currently at her Sonorous Art Center with the support of The National Found of Arts.
She composed music for ensemble and soloist instruments, chamber music, interdisciplinary projects, electroacoustic and mixed pieces, music for theater plays, dance and video art. Her works was performed by talented performers such as Arditti String Quartet, C2, SurPlus Ensemble, Seth Josel Trio, The Jack String Quartet, ACME, Compañía Oblicua, Cepromusic Ensemble, Quinteto Latino, Fractus, LV, Kaparilo, De Ereprijs, among others.
She was director, founder member and performer of different experimental ensembles in Buenos Aires, Paris and Virginia, since 1990, such as: Zhéffiro, ARsis, ThrYzaS, La Nada and Seraphim Ensemble (new early music). She is member and organizer of FASE (non profit organization of artistic policies, since 2001) with a finished law project for contemporary music. She is a jury member at the National Composition Competition J.C.Paz 2015 (National Fund of Arts).
Her works received distinctions and prizes at international competitions including First Prizes at Buenos Aires City Government Arts Competition 1999-2000 (life grant); Casa de las Américas/House of America 2015 (Cuba), 2015 International Music Theatre Competition / Staatstheater Darmstadt / Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt (IMD); International Young Composers' Meeting 1997 (Gaudeamus-Holland); Francisco Kröpfl Prize/SADAIC (Argentina Society of Music Composers and Authors) 2014; IBERMUSICAS-IBERESCENA 2014 (Iber-America); National Composition Competition Juan Carlos Paz; Toda La Data Competition; Second Prize at: Diffusion (University of Limerick-Ireland); TRIME-TRINAC; TRINARG; SonoImagenes Competition (Argentina); Residence Prix at the International Competition of Electroacoustic Music/Bourges (France); Pierre Schaeffer International Competition of Computer Music (Italy); 60 seconds Piano Composition Competition/ParisNewMusicReview; finalist at: American Prize 2013 (USA); Maurice Ravel 2015 (Italy); International Competition of Composers and interpreters Deutsche Gesellschaft Flute (Germany); Destellos 2014.
She received fellowships, grants and commission from: IRCAM, VCCA/UNESCO-Aschberg; Yvar Mikhashoff Trust For New Music Foundation; National Fund of the Arts, University of Quilmes; Stanford University; Luigi Russolo Competition, American Composer Forum and commissions from Experimental Center of the Colon Theater; Antorchas Foundation, Theater Municipal General San Martin, De Ereprijs Ensemble, Culture Fund BA, ProDance, ProTheater, Experimenta Ensemble, Icosaedre Dance Company, FONCA (México), and others. She worked at the electroacoustic Studios: LIEM (Madrid), GMEB, IRCAM, CESARE (France), CCRMA (U.S), ARTE11, UNQ (Argentina).

Director Statement

My works has emerged, in part, from an experimental process of 'stripping-down,' which involves a degree of risk-taking, in that the resulting music is left somewhat vulnerable in terms of its expressive identity.
