First Fish

An old fisherman sits by the sea, catching small glittering fish, symbolizing his memories. A little girl searches, but doesn’t seem to be able to find her own memory. Instead, she dreams of what life could be when she grows up and keeps hiding her little pink dreams in seashells she finds along the coast. Then one day, the fisherman catches a fish that doesn't belong to him...
A poetic story about the importance of memories and dreams in the cycle of human life.

Director Statement

The basic narrative of this metaphorical story is entwined with the motif of memory and its reflection in the interwoven stories of two different characters, spanning across different generations. On the one hand, there is a lonesome, aging man, whose memories, which he catches in the form of shimmering fish in the wide wide sea, return him to the beginning of his life's journey and gradually transfer him into the recent past. On the other hand, the story reveals a lonely little girl, who is too young for memories yet, but has a mind rich with dreams of the great future that she has yet to live. She draws her dreams and hides them in the form of pictures into seashells, which she collects on the wide coast of the beach, the only form of possession or wealth she has so far. The key moment comes with the fusion of the two stories, which is caused by a strange fish on a fishing hook the old man catches. The fish is a stimulus leading to the blending of not only their stories, but particularly the path of the heroes life, a path which eventually proves fatal for them. For the old man it means the end of one life's journey, which itself opens a path to new lives, for the girl, her first memory becomes the fulfilment of her expected reality of life. So on the one side of the shore, the tree of them gradually begin leaving memories to fade, causing them to sprout a new seed on the other shore, full of hopes and dreams. It's through the course of this story that we teach ourselves to learn from others and pass the torch on to the nning of his life's journey and gradually transfer him into the recent past.
