Finding Wee Paddy

Telling the incredible true story of Sara Moran’s 20 year long fight to locate the lost grave of her uncle, Royal Ulster Rifleman Patrick McGowan. Patrick was killed whilst attempting to shelter civilians from a Japanese air attack during the Battle for Shanghai in 1937.

His death caused an international outcry at a time of growing tension between Britain and Japan, it was consequently debated in the British parliament and the story even made the front page of the New York Times. Although he was buried with full military honours in one of the largest funerals Shanghai had ever seen, his grave was subsequently lost years later in the turmoil that swept China during the Cultural Revolution.

Only through a last ditch letter to David Cameron and an incredible piece of luck was Paddy’s resting place finally rediscovered and honoured.
