Director Biography - Erica Eng

Erica Eng grew up in Oakland, CA where she got an early start on her filmmaking career. Being a winner of the San Francisco International Film Festival Golden Gate Award as a high school student, Erica used her prize money to purchase her own camera and began shooting videos for artists and musicians around the bay area. Erica moved to Los Angeles after film school to assist top agents and executives, before working alongside the Academy nominated director Michael Mann. She spent six years learning the industry from the ground up before taking the leap into directing full-time, which is what she does today.

Erica’s work has been showcased in Oscar-qualifying festivals such as the Atlanta Film Festival and the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. Most recently, Erica became one out of six fellows handpicked out of 400 applicants to be apart of the Commercial Directors Diversity Program (CDDP) - a fellowship created with the Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP) and the Directors Guild of America (DGA). She was also chosen for SHOOT Magazine's 16th Annual New Director's Showcase, where her film "POISON" was screened at the Directors Guild Theatre in New York.

Inspired by her Oakland roots, Erica aims to create work that reflects the diverse community in which she grew up. Her background in cinematography, and love of art, influences her rich cinematic style. With poetic imagery, Erica finds beauty within the grit – creating raw stories with complex characters, utilizing dramatic visuals and rhythmic editing to provoke an emotional response.

Director Statement

I wrote this idea based on my experiences growing up in Oakland, CA. I went to Oakland public schools and watched fights break out almost every day. Kids would run towards the action as if it were entertaining or funny, but I never understood what was so funny about watching someone get hurt. Then a website called WorldStar Hip Hop released and street fights were everywhere online.

I felt like this was an important story to tell because I see stories almost every day about a friend who looses a brother, a nephew or a cousin. People have become so numb to violence and death and don't really think about the harsh consequences of their actions. That is what I wanted to express through "Fighter."
