VERGA 100 - Centenary Special Edition -
The Verga Film Festival is a section of the Verghiano Festival, an event in homage to the writer Giovanni Verga which proposes to make known and disseminate audiovisual works that document the different geographical, political and cultural horizons through the medium of film. Cinema as an act of cultural and social communication that dialogues with man and without the use of artificial devices but only through the purity of a true, simple and direct language. A pure event articulated in competitions, cultural meetings and behind the scenes. In evaluating the Works, the Jury will take into account the linguistic and perceptive properties and the ability to promote empathic feelings, making the film medium a useful tool for collective training. The idea is to discover and evaluate a quality cinema that develops around the poetry of images and visual grammar. This special edition will award the prizes internally without conducting a Ceremony
Concept:
Characters, places, communities that represent the identity of a place, whose stories are a symbol of territorial and folkloristic wealth.
Intimate and sincere stories, of men and women in their ordinary life and also of animals. Common, bizarre, eccentric, complex characters. The community and the sense of participation, popular festivals, traditions and customs, various regionalisms that can show the riches of a place.
The story of the Social in its sensitive and direct representation, a simple language that reaches the audience's emotions and instructs them in this regard.
No special Effect :
The idea is to seek in the talent of each filmmaker the ability to tell the everyday without the use of any special effects. A return to an authentic neorealism

VERGA 100 - Edizione speciale Centenaio
Il Verga Film Festival è una seziona parte del Festival Verghiano, Manifestazione in omaggio allo Scrittore Giovanni Verga che propone di fare conoscere e diffondere opere audiovisive che documentano i diversi orizzonti geografici, politici e culturali attraverso il mezzo filmico. Il Cinema come atto di comunicazione culturale e sociale che dialoga con l’uomo e senza l’utilizzo di espedienti artificiali ma solo attraverso la purezza di un linguaggio vero, semplice e diretto. Una manifestazione pura articolata in concorsi, incontri culturali e dietro le quinte. Nella valutazione delle Opere la Giuria terrà conto delle proprietà linguistiche, percettive e capacità di promuovere sentimenti empatici, facendo del mezzo filmico, uno strumento utile alla formazione collettiva. L’idea è quella di scoprire e valutare un cinema di qualità e che si sviluppa attorno alla poesia delle immagini e alla grammatica visiva. Questa edizione speciale attribuirà i premi internamente senza la realizzazione di una Cerimonia
Concept :
Personaggi, luoghi, di comunità che rappresentano l’identità di un luogo, le cui storie sono simbolo di ricchezza territoriale e folkloristica.
Storie intime e sinceri, di uomini e donne nel loro ordinario vivere e anche di animali. Personaggi comuni, bizzarri, eccentrici, complessi. La comunità e il senso di partecipazione, Feste popolari, tradizioni e costumi, regionalismi vari che possano mostrare le ricchezze di un luogo.
Il racconto del Sociale nella sua rappresentazione sensibile e diretta, un linguaggio semplice che arriva a toccare le emozioni del pubblico e istruirlo al riguardo.

CONCORSO PHOTOGRAPHY

Giovanni Verga had a great passion for photography, since he was a child he became passionate about the medium which becomes a way for the surrounding reality. Today his visual production includes more than 400 negatives depicting Sicilian countryside and their inhabitants, but also family portraits and a depiction of himself. In them you can scrutinize the rural environment, the humble figures with a rough face, marked by the sun and fatigue, but also landscapes and streets emptied of people that recall a still, unchanging world. Portraits of men and women emerge with those features that we find in his literary works from "Vita dei Campi" to "Mastro Don Gesualdo". The camera accompanies him on his travels around Italy, from Rome to Florence and then Milan, thus becoming a tool not only to closely observe the environments, but to reconstruct a real narrative. In a letter sent to his friend Luigi Capuana, Giovanni recommends that he have shots that can document rural spaces, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, a sign of how writing was anticipated by a scrupulous research phase.
Verga100 pays homage to his passion by setting up the "Verga Photo Fest" a photo contest, in black and white or sepia - in reference to the ancient style - aimed at documenting the current context and the expression of the souls that populate it.

Giovanni Verga aveva una grande passione per la fotografia, fin da piccolo si appassiona al mezzo che diviene un modo per la realtà circostante. Oggi la sua produzione visiva conta più di 400 negativi che raffigurano campagne siciliane e i loro abitanti, ma anche ritratti di famiglia e raffigurazione di se stesso. In esse si può scrutare l’ambiente rurale, le figure umili col volto ruvido, segnato dal sole e dalla fatica, ma anche paesaggi e vie svuotate di gente che richiamano un mondo fermo, immutabile. Emergono ritratti di uomini e donne con quei tratti che ritroviamo nelle sue opere letterarie da “Vita dei Campi” al “Mastro Don Gesualdo”. La macchina fotografica lo accompagna nei suoi viaggi intorno all’Italia, da Roma a Firenze e poi Milano, divenendo così strumento non solo per osservare intimamente gli ambienti, ma per ricostruire una vera e propria narrazione. In una lettera spedita all’amico Luigi Capuana, Giovanni gli raccomanda di fargli avere scatti che possano documentare spazi campestri, borghesia e proletariato, segno di come la scrittura fosse anticipata da una scrupolosa fase di ricerca.
Verga100 omaggia questa sua passione istituendo il “Verga Photo Fest” un concorso fotografico, in bianco e nero o color seppia – nel rimando allo stile antico – volto a documentare il contesto attuale e l’espressione di anime che lo popolano.

In omaggio alla figura del Celebre scrittore, "Verga 100", Manifestazione ufficiale delle celebrazioni della sua memoria, supportata dal Parlamento Europeo, Consiglio Pontificio Vaticano e Rai Cultura, lancia il concorso conclusivo rivolto ai giovani delle scuole. Attraverso il racconto audiovisivo gli studenti avranno la possibilità di essere protagonisti del Centenario, raccontando lo scrittore, dal suo trascorso a Vizzini - città natia - a quelle che sono state e le sue opere più rappresentative e che lo hanno reso celebre nel mondo. I Book trailer sono tra le realtà più interessanti del patrimonio creativo, un modo semplice per accedere alle informazioni e che avvicinano il giovane alla cultura. Uno strumento utile sia alla formazione che alla ricostruzione di determinati eventi, e in un anno come questo, non si può non promuovere un simile progetto nel racconto del Padre del Verismo. La scadenza del concorso nonché la nomina dei vincitori, coinciderà, simbolicamente, proprio con il 27 gennaio 2023, giorno in cui si chiuderà di fatto l'evento secolare, e periodo in cui saranno previsti importanti appuntamenti.
