She/Her Fest was created to empower, recognize, and promote art created by women identifying filmmakers. She/Her Fest is an inclusive, safe, art community. It is important to know that the festival itself is for EVERYONE regardless of gender!

Hosted in the picturesque Pacific Northwest, She/Her Fest is an annual community gathering that you won't want to miss!

In an article titled Sexist Slurs: Reinforcing Feminine Stereotypes Online from November 28th, 2019, it reads, “We argue that online aggression toward women aims to reinforce traditional feminine norms and stereotypes. In a mixed methods study, we find that this type of aggression on Twitter is common and extensive and that it can spread far beyond the original target. We locate over 2.9 million tweets in one week that contain instances of gendered insults (e.g., “bitch,” “cunt,” “slut,” or “whore”)—averaging 419,000 sexist slurs per day. The vast majority of these tweets are negative in sentiment.”

In observance of this, all of She/Her Fest’s Awards are reclaiming these terms, and adding an emphasis on the adjectives to call attention to the positive traits. Women are Ruthless, Worldly, Creative, and Relentless.

The Ruthless Bitch
This award goes to a filmmaker whose work cuts deep. You watch it and it speaks to a bold truth that many will not speak. The Ruthless Bitch represents how women have to be ruthless to be heard so often.

The Worldly Whore
This award goes to a filmmaker whose work is centered around diverse, socially driven storytelling. This film aims to change our perspective on an important social issue. The Worldly Whore is unashamed to stand up for change.

The Creative Cunt
This award goes to a filmmaker who bends the rules and plays with the unexpected elements of film, through either narrative storytelling or stylistic choices. This film tells its story in a unique, new way that deserves to be celebrated for its risk-taking nature.

The Relentless Slut
This award goes to a filmmaker who boldly embraces sexuality in their work in order to empower and free women. The Relentless Slut celebrates women's pleasure and power in sexuality, regardless of society's take on it!

She/Her Fest was a breath of fresh air – a festival committed to the filmmakers. The venue was high quality (SIFF) and the festival team was fantastic. They were responsive, offered helpful feedback, and worked hard to promote the festival and nurture an audience. It was wonderful to hear messages from the award winners who couldn't make it to the screening.

I highly recommend to any filmmakers who are considering. It is worth your time.
