Santa Barbara Diverse Writers Outreach - Where New Voices Become Market-Ready

There are writers with something real to say.

But too often, their work never reaches a professional standard…
or never gets evaluated at that level.

THIS IS WHERE THAT CHANGES

This initiative is designed for writers from underrepresented and diverse backgrounds who are serious about elevating their work to a market-ready level.

Not separate standards.
Not lowered expectations.

The same professional evaluation used for any script competing in the industry.

WHO THIS IS FOR

We actively seek writers whose perspectives are underrepresented in the industry, including:

• Ethnic and cultural diversity
• LGBTQIA+ voices
• Writers with disabilities
• Religious and international perspectives
• Writers 50+ with lived experience
• Any writer bringing a perspective not commonly seen on screen

This is not about checking boxes.

It’s about developing strong material from voices the industry needs.

WHY WRITERS ENTER

• Judged by working WGA writer-producers
• 1,000+ combined produced credits across our senior judging panel
• Real studio-level development standards
• Every script receives detailed, actionable feedback
• Select finalists considered for industry exposure opportunities

WHAT YOU GET

• 6–12 pages of detailed, professional screenplay analysis
• Clear identification of strengths and weaknesses
• Specific, actionable rewrite guidance
• Evaluation of marketability and development potential

FOR WRITERS WHO WANT TO COMPETE AT A PROFESSIONAL LEVEL

This is not about validation.

It’s about execution.

Because the difference between being heard… and being overlooked…
is often how well the material is developed.

PREMIUM OPTION

Take it further with a private 90-minute Line Notes and Live Consultation with an award-winning WGA writer-producer.

This is where:
• Your pages are examined in detail
• Your questions get answered
• Your rewrite strategy becomes clear

THE GOAL

Not just to recognize diverse voices.

To help them deliver work that stands up at the highest professional level.

  • I am deeply honored and profoundly grateful to have my faith=base screenplay At The Mercy Of Faith recognized as a semifinalist in the glorious Santa Barbara Screenplay Awards Diverse Writers Outreach!

But the most important thought I wish to share is that I was thoroughly amazed and brought to tears by the feedback from the Santa Barbara Fest.

I could tell that the reader read my script from start to finish and understood the message, energy and devotion I had exhausted myself in writing my story. The comments and thoughts for me to ponder by the reader felt real, caring, supportive and constructive!

  • The SBSASWO has been given me a share experience! The coverage given on my scripts has been incredibly valuable and given from a perspective of someone who understood the culture being portrayed in the work. And, the feedback and the communications have been beyond life changing! I recommend this festival to everyone! And, thanks for the two Semi-finals nods for the Sexton and New Dawn.
