The Exploring Risk Film Festival is a celebration of science, story-telling, and how to believe in a better world. Hosted by Durham University, the festival asks filmmakers to consider hazards to human life, society and wellbeing and how we might imagine a just, safe and sustainable future.

The Exploring Risk Film Festival invites makers and viewers to consider what is missing from how we understand and communicate human struggles with global significance.

The festival will take place on the 4th May 2022 at Durham University, Durham. Tickets will be available nearer the date.

Who can submit films?
Anyone and everyone. The Exploring Risk film festival is open submission to anyone who is working in the field of risk and resilience. Risk is broadly defined and includes professionals, volunteers and students.

What kinds of films are accepted?
Both fiction and non-fiction films are accepted, as long as the core theme is related to risk and resilient futures.

What language can the film be in?
Films are accepted in either English or in any-language with English subtitles.

How long can the film be?
We are looking for films between five and 30 minutes long. Longer films will be considered if they speak directly to a theme.

What are the deadlines for submitting?
1st April 2022 for all submissions.

How are the films selected?
The films will be selected by a panel of researchers and teachers of Risk from IHRR.

Are there fees to pay to submit a film?
No.

Can I submit more than one film?
Yes, but there is a maximum of three films per contributor.

Will I be paid to have my film featured?
Yes, we will pay a screening for each film featured, depending on the length of the film.
