VISIONFEST began in August of 2001 as VISIONFEST: THE OTHER FESTIVAL (commonly referred to as VF). The film festival and its affiliated screenwriting competition were founded by the Domani Vision Film Society LLC, an organization dedicated to "bringing you tomorrow’s visionaries... today," and this year, in collaboration with North Country Live Events, VISIONFEST returns to a live event format for three days of film screenings, networking opportunities, and a rooftop awards ceremony (weather permitting).
Celebrating its 26th annual run, VISIONFEST is being held at the legendary music and theater venue, The Strand, in Watertown, NY, September 18-20, 2026. The event will showcase a series of short film screenings selected and curated from our qualifying "Official Selections" determined from our call for entries. A rooftop awards ceremony on the third and final day will single out Outstanding Achievements in various film categories, as well as the top three selections from our each of our Short and Feature categories of the Screenwriting Competition.
Our call for entries is open to short films, as well as feature-length and short screenplays with fresh, original, and visionary voices. We are accepting completed short subject films (running up to 45 minutes in length) in the following categories:
Narrative, TV/Web Pilot, Documentary, Music Video, and Animation/Experimental/AI.
The Screenwriting Competition section will be be open to unproduced short and feature-length script submissions adhering to the following guidelines: 3-30 pages for short scripts; 80-130 pages for feature scripts, in any genre, written in English and in Standard Script Format. Please note that any script exceeding 130 pages will be disqualified automatically and submission fees will not be reimbursed.
VISIONFEST organizers and qualified industry jury members vote on and select the films that will participate in the three-day screenings showcase. Professional industry readers review all submitted scripts for Finalist and Winner selections.
The IVAs (Independent Vision Awards) will be handed out at the final awards ceremony to honor outstanding achievement in each film category, as well as singling out specific technical achievements in Editing, Cinematography, Writing, Production, and Direction, as chosen from the overall pool of Official Selections. The legendary Jack Nance Award for Breakthrough Performance will honor an acting performance that stands out from the Narrative Shorts category. Film awards consist of sleek, acrylic statuettes, Commemorative Certificates, and/or sponsored prizes.
The winning Feature screenplay will receive a $1000 cash prize and the winning Short script will receive a cash prize of $350. Both also receive a 4-Month InkTip Pro membership. The second and third place Short and Feature screenplay honorees will receive Commemorative Certificates and a 4-month InkTip Pro Membership*
