Eastern Europe Film Festival was born as a tribute to the great film and theater actor Ilie Gheorghe. The initiative to establish the festival was taken by his family members who have a strong reputation in the artistic and academic world.

The festival is possible with the help of the local authorities in Craiova and the Association" SOCIETATEA NATIONALA SPIRU HARET PENTRU EDUCATIE, STIINTA SI CULTURA ". This association has centers in Bucharest, Craiova, Brasov, Constanta and Campulung Muscel.

The idea of the festival started from the fact that the Shakespeare theater festival was taking place in Craiova, but it was not a film festival. As soon as the idea was born, the family members received support from numerous directors and actors with whom the great actor Ilie Gheorghe played over the years in over 80 theater roles and 20 film roles.
To begin with, the festival was organized in Craiova, the city where the great actor excelled in his career at the Marin Sorescu Theater.
With the support of the association, in the future, the festival wants to take place in the other cities mentioned above as well.

The festival takes place monthly in the city of Craiova. The winners receive certificates and trophies provided by the sponsors.

THE ILIE GHEORGHE AWARD FOR THE BEST ACTOR.
This award is given once a year. In the competition, the winners participate in the best actor in the monthly editions.
The prize winner will get a special certificate and the amount of 1500 euros. The amount is sponsored by the family of the actor Ilie Gheorghe. The winner must have an artistic interpretation close to that of the actor Ilie Gheorghe. The jury has the reserved right not to award this prize if the quality of the interpretations is not the desired one.

The executive director of the festival is the distinguished Romanian language teacher Sandu Turneanu, whose career was at the High School Pedagogical Stefan Velovan from Craiova.
