Founded by the nonprofit Rainforest Partnership in 2010, Films for the Forest invites filmmakers from around the world to share the voices and stories of forests worldwide, highlighting their rich biodiversity and local communities, their immense beauty and importance to the entire planet, the threats they face, and the opportunities for renewal.

Why Films For the Forest?

Do you remember watching a film that inspired you to take action? The art of filmmaking can transport us to new places, introduce us to new perspectives, and tell stories that resonate with us on a deeper level. At Rainforest Partnership, we believe in the transformative power of film. This is why we created Films for the Forest, our international film challenge, in 2010.

Films For the Forest 2024. Water: Fertility & Prosperity

While many view forests merely as areas that can be converted into timber or land for livestock and agriculture, in reality, the significance of these vast ecosystems extends far beyond such utilitarian purposes.

Our planet needs forests.

The daily lives of each of us depend heavily on healthy forests for what we need to survive. Forests, especially Rainforests, contribute to maintaining healthy water systems by acting as natural filters, regulating water flow and rainfall distribution, preventing erosion and desertification, cycling nutrients, regulating temperatures, and supporting overall biodiversity. The impact of forests on the global water cycle cannot be overstated.

Rainforest moves more water than any other ecosystem on land.

Without forests, the future of food production as we know it would be in great danger. Deforestation greatly alters climate regulation, creating droughts or floods (depending on the area), that directly impact crop productivity. These drastic effects are not limited to the surrounding areas of tropical forest, but impact locations thousands of miles away.

This year, we aim to inspire filmmakers to showcase the importance of forests and water through their diverse talents and creative expressions.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Definitions:

Films for the Forest also known as F3

Launched by Rainforest Partnership in 2010, Films for the Forest (F3) is an annual juried short film competition that invites filmmakers from around the world to share the voices and stories of forests worldwide, highlighting their rich biodiversity and local communities, their immense beauty and importance to the entire planet, the threats they face, and the opportunities for renewal.

Films for the Forest aims to use the power of creative visual storytelling to convene, empower, and activate global audiences to take action on behalf of the world's forests.

Rainforest Partnership

Founded in 2007 in Austin, Texas, Rainforest Partnership is an international nonprofit organization that protects tropical rainforests by partnering with indigenous and local communities to support sustainable livelihoods, thriving biodiversity, and long-term conservation.

Film definition:
The term ‘Film’ shall include any titles, scripts, books, photographs, drawings, and other materials or information provided in connection with the submission.

Indigenous peoples:
Indigenous peoples shall have the same meaning as provided in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Specifically, indigenous peoples are those who:

Self-identify as indigenous peoples at the individual level and are accepted by their community as their members.

Have historical continuity with pre-colonial and pre-settler societies.
Have strong links to territories and surrounding natural resources.
Maintain distinct social, economic, or political systems.
Maintain distinct languages, cultures, and beliefs.
Form non-dominant groups of society.
