KOŠICE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2026 (December 11–13, 2026)
The Košice International Film Festival is a film festival aimed at film professionals, critics, distributors, arthouse audiences, and film school students. Each year, the festival screens and hosts in person several award-winning Slovak films. In the past, these have included works by creators such as:
Peter Kerekes – 107 Mothers – World Premiere: Venice Film Festival
Juraj Lehotský – Plastic Symphony – World Premiere: Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival
Martin Gonda – Pura Vida – World Premiere: Festival de Cannes, La Cinef section
Katarína Gramatová – Promise I’ll Be Fine – European Premiere: Karlovy Vary IFF
The festival has presented numerous films in world, European, and Slovak premieres. The FilmFreeway platform ranked us 7th overall (and 1st in the European Union and the 2nd most popular in Eastern Europe) among the best-reviewed film festivals on the platform, out of more than 13,000 festivals worldwide. The festival takes place in the pre-Christmas season, when Košice hosts its Christmas markets, creating a warm and pleasant pre-holiday atmosphere.
The festival has organized many festival days and activities, including a workshop on filming with the Sony Venice 2, a masterclass on film analysis of The Godfather with Slovak film director and screenwriter Michal Baláž, regular Feedback Meetings, a guided tour of the city of Košice with Milan Kolcún, networking events for filmmakers and screenwriters, and a Red Carpet event.
Each year, the festival is held in the welcoming setting of the iconic Kino Úsmev, one of the oldest continuously operating brick-and-mortar cinemas in Slovakia, in operation since 1922. Naturally, it has undergone renovations over the years and received the Baumit Facade of the Year Award 2017. Kino Úsmev has auditoriums with capacities of 300, 50, and 20 seats. The cinema also features a bar where you can enjoy some of the best Slovak beer on tap.
The festival jury is composed annually of film professionals from around the world. Past jury members have included filmmakers such as:
Dekel Berenson (United Kingdom) – Official Selection, Festival de Cannes 2019
Hynek Spurný (Czech Republic) – Official Selection, Festival de Cannes 2023
Dominik Bari (Slovakia) – Oscar-qualified short film, 2019
The festival’s main partners include: Shorts Wrap, Kino Úsmev, Golden Royal Košice, dog 95 film factory, ALTUM FRAMES, nukleon frame, ArtOne, artify, artcube, nukleon unity, Secondary Film School Košice, PR Janka Marczellová, FilmFreeway, Košice Film Office, Retro Club Košice, Prague Film Festival, and International Film Festival ZOOM – ZBLIŻENIA.
The festival works closely with SHORTS WRAP, which brings together more than 12 filmmakers whose works have premiered at Cannes, including Raymund Ribay Gutierrez (Philippines), Helena Brooks (Australia), Javier Palleiro (Uruguay), Erenik Beqiri (Albania), Daria Kashcheeva (Czech Republic), and many others.
The festival has honored many significant film directors. Previous winners include Morad Mostafa (Henet Ward, premiere: Clermont International Film Festival), Molly Manning Walker (Good Thanks, You?, premiere: Semaine de la Critique – Cannes), Zachary Woods (David, premiere: Festival de Cannes), Guy Nattiv (Skin – Academy Award winner), Charlie Manton (November 1st, Bronze Academy Award), Georgi M. Unkovski (Sticker, premiere: Sundance Film Festival), Anthony Nti (Da Yie?, premiere: Clermont International Film Festival), Guillermo García López (Aunque es de noche, premiere: Festival de Cannes, GOYA Awards winner), and many more.
The festival focuses on social issues, minority stories, and presents top-tier international films. It was founded by young Slovak film director Erik Jasaň, whose film was Oscar-qualified, with the vision of bringing artistically acclaimed international short and feature films—many of which had not yet premiered in Slovakia—to Slovak and Košice audiences and film students. Erik bid farewell to the festival in Košice at KIFF 2025, and the baton has been passed to Slovak film producer Peter Poch.
The festival also includes discussions aimed at film school students, featuring guests who are film school graduates now working in the professional film industry. The names of the individual sections honor notable personalities from Košice or figures closely connected to the city. In this way, we pay tribute to their legacy and strive to promote the city of Košice worldwide.
See you in Košice, at Kino Úsmev, from December 11 to 13, 2026!
