This Video/Short Film contest is organized by the African Educational Research Network (AERN). The mission of AERN is to promote information and scholarship about Africa. From January 7 to March 1, 2019, students, faculty, professionals, and individuals from all over the world will submit a short video of 5 minutes to 10 minutes about one’s own personal pride regarding an African country, a part of an African country, something positive about Africa, African as a continent, or any similar point of African pride. The videos will be ranked by a panel of judges. The best 10 selected videos/short films will be screened in an Award Ceremony during the International Week at Ohio University.

The contest is part of International week at Ohio University. Throughout the week, there will be screening of high-caliber international films and documentaries from all over the world, including Africa.

The theme of the contest is: Why am I proud of Africa?

Please, use stories, images, sounds, facts, information, and any other resources to explain why you are proud of Africa. Your video/short film can be either about the African continent, the people of Africa, an African country, a region of Africa, a region of an a given African country, an accomplished African, or any other similar point of pride.

First Prize: $ 500.00

Second Prize: $ 300.00

Third Prize: $200.00

Format and Submission
Participants must produce Videos/Short films with a total running time 5 to 10 minutes. Videos/Short films may be produced using any device of your choice, such as a professional camera, a smart phone, an ipad or a tablet, or any other similar device. Evaluation
A panel of qualified judges with backgrounds in media and/or African studies will rank each video/film based on the following criteria: Introduction, story line, documentation, subject content, content and organization, mechanics, and production quality.

Who can participate?
Individuals from anywhere in the world can submit a film to participate in this contest. There is NO membership requirement.

Deadline for entry
Videos/Short films with a total running time between 5 and 10 minutes will be accepted from January 8, 2019 through February 28, 2019.

Language
Videos/Short films should be in English or in an African language, with subtitling in English.

Rights
Any individual who submits a video/short film automatically acknowledges having the legal right to negotiate the use of the work by AERN. Participants should be prepared to provide relevant still images, a short biography, a photo, and the transcripts of the subtitling.

Selection announcement
AERN will inform applicants by mid-March 2019 if their film is selected.

Fee
The mission of AERN is to promote information and scholarship about Africa. There is no fee to submit a video/short film in this contest.
