'Life'

The curating team of the 2024 Riga Pasaules Film Festival is calling for film submissions on the theme of ‘Life’.

We are interested in curating a programme with films that deal with being alive, a notion that focuses on experience, sensitivity and curiosity, rather than on categories embedded in cultural values and represented through language. Instead of reflecting on the question “who are we?”, we want to ask questions like “what matters to us?” and “what drives our existence?” We are looking for films that show a connection between filmmaking and living, where plot takes a secondary position to the cinematic presentation of life in film works that allude to the vitality of the everyday. These would be, for example, “slice of life” films or observational cinema.

We look forward to stories about companionship between humans and other organisms that investigate how our lives coincide. How can cinema inform us about the ways plants and animals are alive? We would also like to investigate the relationship between humans and elements of the non-animated world commonly considered lifeless, such as technology, AI, the mineral world, water, spiritual beings, and so on. In what way could they be alive? How can we tell, and who decides?

We also seek experimental works that mimic life’s organic flow or creatively take on non-human perspectives. We are equally interested in animated documentaries, as they can be seen as dealing directly with the transition from the inanimate to the animated.

NB: RPFF 2024 has a 3 EUR submission fee.

A wonderfully organised and curated film festival on a fascinating theme. Communications were excellent from beginning to end. Sadly, because of Corona, I could not be there in person. But I will go as soon as it is possible. I had one of the most interesting Q and A experiences ever.
