Heritales – International Heritage Film Festival 2024 –
"The role of peace for sustainable communities"

The Heritales project aims to disseminate material and immaterial heritage using narratives of an artistic and playful nature. It is based on photography, games, theatre, performances, or interactive media, mainly on the seventh art through documentaries, animated films, and short films. It considers that the promotion of the world's different cultures should be shared forever through these supports. On the one hand, it aims to encourage sustainability linked to communities and promote a reinterpretation of what can be valued as cultural heritage, emphasizing the importance of education to transmit it. On the other hand, it wants to encourage new ways of transferring knowledge, encouraging intercultural dialogue, and giving way to international scientific collaboration through partnerships.

In this 6th edition, the Heritales Festival will bring together films, documentaries, and other artistic works. It will explore once again cultural diversity and promote the sustainability of cultures and places, communities, and ecosystems. Over three months, more than 20 films will be available for viewing and voting online, and also promoting live sessions in various international spaces. The culmination of the festival is celebrated with an award ceremony in the last week of September. As part of the event, we will try to organize a three-day residency for the directors of the selected works. During this period, workshops and debates will take place, and film projections for the general public.

In this sixth edition, Heritales would like to consolidate a partnership with the UNESCO Chair of Education for Global Peace and Sustainability at the University of Lisbon (Portugal). We will be supported by MUSEUS E MONUMENTOS DE PORTUGAL, E.P.E

We invite you to participate in this selection phase. Share your experiences with us and with filmmakers from around the world. You can follow our activities on Twitter, Facebook, and on our website heritales.org

Like in previous years, Heritales will accept authors of different backgrounds, working in historical, archaeological, anthropological, and social studies of past present, and future cultures, sites, and objects.

There will be 4 main entry categories: shorts (up to 20 min duration), medium (from 20 min to 40 min. duration), long (from 40 min duration to 80 min. duration), and animation (up to 40 min duration). In the animation category, it is not required to submit work on the current subtopic of "The role of peace for sustainable communities" but we will consider any topic regarding cultural heritage and sustainable communities.

Authors are required to submit their films before the 30th of April 2024. The selected films will be shown starting from the 1st of June until the ceremony awards at the end of September 2024.

We will contact the winners to confirm his/her participation in the ceremony at the end of July 2024.

All selected films will be screened online and at physical events in different countries. The submitters will need to create a free Vimeo account, upload their film and share it publicly between the 1st of June and the 31st of September.
We will create the 2024 collection of the 2024 competition on our Vimeo account and embed the film on our platform for the people to vote.
The free Vimeo account will be enough for the video work to be screened online, however, we recommended having a professional account to rely on more bandwidth.

  • We were honored to be part of the Heritales Film Festival as it was the perfect setting for our documentary Mama Irene, Healer of the Andes. The Co-Director of the festival, Nicola, was wonderful to work with. He tried to make the impossible possible with great care. Finally we got the chance to say our 'Thank You's virtually at the award ceremony where we received an Honorary Mention. Thank you for a great experience.

  • Wonderful festival on sustainable communities safeguarding natural and urban heritage. I was really honored to be present this year with my film Mamody, the last baobab digger. Even I couldn't attend the festival, it was a very nice experience.
