ABOUT ROUTES TO ROOTS FILM FESTIVAL (R2RFF)
Taking place in the rural community of Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada, Routes to Roots Film Festival (R2RFF) showcases short and feature length films from around the world. Now in its third year, the two day, not-for-profit festival is organized by a volunteer, working Board of Directors made up of a diverse cross-section of film industry professionals as well as local business and community leaders.
Routes to Roots is a play on R.R., or Rural Routes, which is a mail route in a rural area. It also represents an exploration of the journey back to our roots in rural life. This focus allows our audience to compare and contrast their own experiences with other rural areas from around the world. We look for films that spark conversation.
For Feature and Short categories R2RFF welcomes narrative work in all genres*. Children's shorts are not required to be narrative films. *R2RFF does not take submissions of documentaries in any category. We've featured everything from comedy to drama, from science fiction to arthouse surreal. What’s critical to our audience is the connection to rural life. If your work is set in, or contains significant scenes in a rural area, and/or if it explores themes about rural life or returning to your roots, this is the festival for you. Please read the Rules and Terms carefully for length allowances and specific requirements. If you are unsure if your work would qualify, you can take a look at the films we have shown in the past at www.r2rff.com.
If you are a filmmaker that was born, has resided, or currently lives in Norfolk County, ON CANADA we have a special entry fee waiver for you. Please contact Curator/Programmer Elana Post at elana.post@r2rff.com
If you are unable to pay the submission fee because you are submitting from a country currently sanctioned or embargoed by the US government, please contact Elana Post at elana.post@r2rff.com for assistance.
Each year R2RFF arranges for filmmakers to attend the festival and take part in our opening gala, our in-depth Q & A sessions, and our closing celebration. Invited filmmakers may receive perks such as complimentary accommodation, including the world renowned luxury glamping at Long Point Eco-Adventures, festival passes, catered events, and much more.
As an event, R2RFF highlights the best of Norfolk County, from its scenic lakeside tourist destinations to its growing wine, beer and food culture. It is funded by forward thinking local businesses with support from the municipality, and it adds to the thriving arts community. This is a festival for an audience of fans who want to see features and shorts that they can’t easily access elsewhere.
MISSION & OBJECTIVE
R2RFF is an annual showcase of local, national, and international film with an emphasis on themes of returning to roots, rural life, and strong rural settings. R2RFF features but is not exclusive to new filmmakers.
Rural: in, relating to, or characteristic of the countryside rather than the city.
New Filmmaker: having made fewer than three films in any one of the following three categories, Narrative Feature, Narrative Short and Children’s Short. For example a filmmaker may have made several short films, but is submitting their first feature film to R2RFF. The term filmmaker includes, but is not exclusive to, writer, director, and director of photography.
It exists to:
• engage audiences with award-winning, thought-provoking storytelling that may be unavailable elsewhere
• encourage new and emerging filmmakers
• celebrate Norfolk County as a place to visit, live and work
