*CANCELED due to understaffing* The Holden Village Film Festival returns March 17-21, 2022. This unique winter festival, set in the remote wilderness of the Cascade Mountains, began in 2012.

The festival categories are:18 and under, animation, narrative, and documentary. Winners in each category will be invited to the Village to participate in the festival. They will introduce their films and interact in the Q & A afterward and attend an awards ceremony.

Holden Village is the most remote continuously inhabited community in the continental United States. Over the course of 60 years, Holden has evolved from a copper mining town to a vibrant place of education, program, and community. All who seek contemplation and community are welcome. We invite people of all ages to come and experience the rhythms of this place, which inspires and equips travelers for a sustainable life of faith outside the Village. Holden Village offers artist programs that support individuals seeking to find their distinct voice in the visual arts, film, poetry, and storytelling.

While film is the focus of the festival, attendees can also snowshoe and ski cross-country, weave on a loom, create ceramics, and volunteer to help in this working community. We encourage artists and film fans from around the world to attend the festival.

Some key points to consider:

1. It takes a bit of a pilgrimage to reach Holden – you cannot drive here; you must travel by boat, a two-hour ride on Lake Chelan. The Lady of the Lake boat company runs in the winter on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from Chelan, Washington, and from Fields Point Landing. A Village bus picks up visitors at Lucerne Landing and transports them 12 miles deeper into the wilderness.

2. The Village has an average annual snowfall of 276 inches and in March you will likely find snow. Make sure to pack for the cold weather. If you bring the boots, we’ll provide the snowshoes!

Visit www.holdenvillage.org to learn more about Holden Village.

The award for winning your category (18 and under, animation, narrative, or documentary) is to spend March 17 - 21 for free at Holden Village. You may bring one guest for free.

Filmmakers must submit their film BOTH as a hard copy (DVD or USB drive) mailed to the Village AND here on the FilmFreeway site.

Films must have been released in the 3 years prior to the festival, so for 2022, they should have been released in 2019 or later.

18 and Under category means that the filmmakers were 18 years of age or younger when they released the film.

Required Submission Materials

BOTH a preview DVD (USB drive is also acceptable) AND film submission here on the FilmFreeway site are required to be eligible for consideration.

Preview DVD (NTSC): DVDs must be submitted in plastic safe cases and be formatted in MPEG video. We recommend testing your DVD on several makes and models of DVD players. DVDs will not be returned unless you provide a self-addressed, prepaid return envelope. Submitting your film on a USB drive that plays on VLC is also acceptable.

We require a physical DVD or USB drive here at Holden Village because we are not able to stream due to our remote location. Some of the judges on our panel do not reside at Holden; thus, we ALSO require filmmakers to submit here on the FilmFreeway site so we can send a link to our panel judges outside of the Village.

If your film is not in English, it needs to have English subtitles.

If your film is selected, filmmakers will be asked to be available for one or two-panel discussions throughout the week, a Q-and-A session following the showing of their film, as well as attending the films of others.

Submission materials should be mailed to:

Loved it! Entirely unique film festival experience in the heart of the Cascade Mountains. The Holden Village community was so gracious and welcoming to the filmmakers. Film screenings were well attended with thoughtful conversations during the Q & A. Beautiful setting! The village is built on the site of an old Copper Mine so there are plenty of trails and natural wonders to explore. I came for the whole week and am very glad I did. Great people, great attention to films, and a wildly unique experience. Highly recommended.
