The American Documentary and Animation Film Festival and Film Fund (AmDocs) is one of the largest documentary and animation festivals in the United States, held in beautiful Palm Springs — just a short drive from the media capital of Hollywood. This internationally recognized event celebrates excellence in documentary, animation, and music video storytelling across both short and feature formats.

Recipients of the festival’s qualifying awards become eligible for consideration in the Documentary Short Film and Animated Short Film categories of the Academy Awards®, without the standard theatrical run, provided their films meet Academy rules.

In conjunction with the festival, the American Documentary Film Fund supports U.S. filmmakers through competitive grants for start-up and finishing funds, helping visionary works reach completion.

With over 95% of its program drawn from film submissions, AmDocs proudly champions authentic voices from around the world — where reality meets imagination.

For the Film Fund, competing filmmakers can win up to $50,000 in cash and post-production prizes.

Since 2021, Film Fund Competitors will have the opportunity to partner with European co-producers as the Pitch Competition will take place in Jihlava, Czech Republic during the Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival, late October 2027.

The festival is open to all categories within the documentary and animation film genres. The film should not be more than 3 years old, though in certain circumstances, a retrospective may be screened and/or a "hidden gem" never seen before by public.

Festival shall screen films digitally and, therefore, you must submit film as a media file in order to be transferred to a Digital Cinema Projection file for screening purposes if you do not already have a DCP file for exhibition. Filmmaker is RESPONSIBLE for the Digital Cinema Projection file. Festival shall do all it can to negotiate discounted rates for filmmaker if they do not have their own DCP file. Filmmaker may be required to provide a rendered disc of their film as a blu-ray back-up.

If you are sending a "work-in-progress" please note how long you are from completion and approximately when you are sending completed version. (Please note on completed copy your original reference number provided by FilmFreeway.)

Filmmakers are encouraged to attend festival if their film is invited. They shall receive an "all festival" pass, including films and events. Moreover, housing shall be provided either in resident homes or hotel discounts near theaters.

Any payment by check must be made out to:

What a fantastic festival! The organizers were incredibly gracious, helping to move our screening to a time when we could make it in person. And the Homestay Program makes it possible for filmmakers to show up and build community without breaking the bank. Wonderful projection quality, enthusiastic audience and a great Q and A. I can't recommend this fest highly enough!

Liz, you were such a joy to have at our festival. We hope that you keep making films and we shall see you again at some point in the future!

I attended this festival way back in 2012 during it's inaugural year. I'm very impressed at how much it's grown since then. All the screening I attended, including my own, had excellent turnout and super engaged audiences of both filmmakers and residents alike. Projection from DCPs was excellent. Making us feel totally spoiled though - were the festival's volunteers and the homestay program. We had wonderful hosts who treated us like royalty, there were lovely volunteers who shuttled us to and fro, hosted lavish parties each night and moderated Q&As with care. Highly recommend!

Wow what a great fest! Teddy and the team were so inviting and easy to talk to. The programming was stellar and the theaters boasted great sound and picture quality. The opening night party at the local air museum was one to remember. Such a fun, memorable time.
