Quantum Shorts

Quantum Shorts invites submissions for its short film festival. Films should be inspired by or related to the themes and ideas of quantum physics, using the field’s science, history, philosophy or technology as a springboard for narrative or abstract films of no more than 5 minutes in length.

Up to 10 finalists will be selected for international screenings and receive a screening fee. Additional prizes will be decided by a panel of judges, with a first prize award of $1500, runner up prize of $1000 and a People's Choice prize decided by public voting.

Entry is free. The deadline for entries is 23:59 GMT on 5 December 2022.

Quantum Shorts will work with scientific partners and screening partners to hold screenings of the shortlisted films in 2023. Look out for details of events announced later.

Quantum physics, which describes the behaviour of matter at atomic and subatomic scales, has long provided inspiration for artists, writers, film-makers and philosophers. Quantum objects can be in two places or states at once, a phenomenon known as superposition that inspired the famous “Schrödinger’s Cat” paradox. Among its other features is entanglement, where objects such as atoms hold a strange influence over each other, changing each other’s properties without physical contact or signals passing between them. Practically, these phenomena hold promise for building new kinds of computers and sensors, drawing attention and funding from businesses and governments world-wide.

Run by the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National University of Singapore with a constellation of prestigious partners including Scientific American magazine and the journal Nature, the Quantum Shorts contest series is now in its eleventh year. Quantum Shorts has alternated between annual calls for science fiction and science films since 2012.
