In our intimate, small and independent setting, we celebrate half a decade of hosting the Malaysia Mental Health Film Festival every October 10. Last year, our event blossomed into a modest physical gathering, thanks to our dedicated venue partner.

The escalating visibility of mental health challenges in the media has ignited an even fiercer determination within us to ignite the flames of mental health awareness.

Our mission is clear:

2. Cultivate an environment where individuals facing mental health battles can find solace, inspiration, and empowerment through a diverse range of engaging on-the-ground activities.

3. Champion the cause of dismantling the stigma surrounding mental illness, underscoring that there are welcoming platforms where individuals can freely express their concerns.

  • The organisers really need to make clearer what exactly this festival is to filmmakers before we even submit, and improve communication afterwards.

Our film was selected, then a few weeks later was switched to not selected. I emailed to check what was happening and was told they'd check with the judges, and soon after, selected again! But apparently selected doesn't mean screening? Only the finalists screen.

This might be a great festival to attend, but the whole process is confusing and I still have no idea exactly what meaning our film being selected has, since clearly it doesn't mean screening.

This is such an important and timely film festival and I'm honored to have our short film featured here. May the festival organizers continue their service in spreading mental health awareness and allowing visual storytellers like myself to share our films and message.
