GIF is a uniquely contemporary medium of digital communication popularly used in derivative manners to highlight specific moments from pre-existing visual media. The secondhand and easily-sharable nature of GIF has caused it to be misconceived as a frivolous and shallow medium. Gifs are often intended to be witty or humorous, thus making it difficult for the medium to break from its genre template.
