Rules & Terms

AN INTRODUCTION

Digital Institute for Early Parenthood (http://www.DIEP.org.uk) is inviting professional artists/filmmakers from all over the world to submit short films they created in response to their own pregnancy, birth and/or new parenthood experience(s).

The most powerful and engaging submissions will be selected to feature in BROOD FILM FEST 2016; the first international short film festival in the world on the subject of early parenthood. As the first and only short film festival of its kind, it is likely to attract widespread attention. Selected artists will be promoted through a global marketing & social media campaign and receive international exposure through DIEP and its partners’ networks.

BROOD FILM FEST 2016 will launch at Exeter Phoenix 27 & 28 Sep 2016 before being presented and promoted online to global audiences by the new Digital Institute for Early Parenthood for six weeks from 1st Oct – 11th Nov 2016.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Our panel will be looking for powerful and engaging work, reflecting a variety of personal perspectives on 21st century early parenthood experiences by a mix of emerging and well-established professional contemporary filmmakers.

Films are by no means required to be literal representations or documentations of early parenthood. We are particularly interested in new ideas and approaches. So surprise us.

ELIGIBILITY

We accept short film submissions of all production techniques, including animation, documentary, drama, experimental or artist film and hybrid work from low to high budgets.

Though we accept work which includes/has its basis in disciplines other than filmmaking (i.e. visual, performing or literary arts), within each submitted work the medium of filmmaking must have its own artistic merit, hence its role must extend beyond mere documentation/recording purposes.

Films must have a maximum duration of 20 minutes including credits.

Brood Film Fest is open to work reflecting on all stages/aspects of early parenthood from the point of conception up until toddlerhood, including any stages/aspects of pregnancy, birth and caring for a baby/infant/toddler.

We accept films from all over the world, but if the original language of any dialogue or text featured in the film is not English, the preview and screening copy must be subtitled in English.

Films must have been made in the 21st century and reflect/be inspired by/deal with/respond to 21st century lived experiences of early parenthood.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU NOW

In addition to your submission/details as outlined by FilmFreeway and the £15/$20 submission fee*, we need you to email a brief ARTIST STATEMENT (maximum 300 words) to BroodFilmFest@diep.org.uk about your submitted work(s), including information on how the work(s):
- came about (what was the idea behind its/their creation);
- relate(s) to/were inspired by your own early parenthood experience(s);
- fit(s) within (or stands out from) your wider artistic practice/work/vision.
Please include your and your submitted film's details in the email so that we can cross reference it with your FilmFreeway submission and profile.

* Brood Film Fest is a new and independent annual film festival which receives no funding yet and its selection panel members are not paid for their work. We therefore need to charge our submission fee cover part of our admin/processing/technical costs.

WHAT WE MAY NEED FROM YOU LATER (IF YOUR FILM IS SELECTED)

If your work(s) is/are selected for Brood Film Fest, you may have to send us a hard copy of your film(s) on a USB stick/DVD by post, to reach us by Friday 9 Sep 2016. We will confirm details of this (format, postal address, etc.) in an email we will send out to all successful applicants by mid-August.

IMPORTANT DATES

• The deadline for receipt of submissions is Monday 18 July 2016
• The panel aims to notify all selected artists/filmmakers by 19 August 2016*
• Brood Film Fest will launch at Exeter Phoenix on 27 & 28 Sep 2016
• Brood Film Fest will be presented and promoted online at the new Digital Institute for Early Parenthood from 1st Oct – 11th Nov 2016

*Please note that due to our limited capacity and the high level of submissions expected we are not able to correspond with/give feedback to artists that are not selected for Brood Film Fest 2016.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

If our panel of judges select your work(s) for Brood Film Fest 2016:
1. Your film(s) will be screened at Exeter Phoenix’s new Studio 74 cinema for a special Brood Film Fest launch event on Tue 27 Sep 2016 before being screened there to audiences at various times throughout the day from 10am until 10pm on Wed 28 Sep 2016;
2. Your film(s) will be screened and promoted online to worldwide audiences by Digital Institute for Early Parenthood from Mon 1 Oct - Fri 11 Nov;

DIEP ASSOCIATE ARTIST PROGRAMME MEMBERSHIP

If you are selected for Brood Film Fest 2016 you will automatically become a member of DIEP’s Associate Artist Programme for one year, entitling you to:

 representation on DIEP’s website with your own Associate Artist profile page;
 unlimited FREE submissions to all of DIEP‘s open Calls for Submissions;
 automatic consideration for other applicable curated activities, exhibitions and events initiated by DIEP;
 international promotion to independent researchers, academics, curators and arts professionals;
 personal alerts to relevant jobs, projects, research, funding and other applicable opportunities offered by DIEP, its partners and other relevant organisations in DIEP‘s international network;
 presentation to worldwide audiences through DIEP and its partners’ newsfeeds, mailing lists, social media channels and websites;
 a DIEP Associate Artist accreditation logo for your website.

DECLARATION

By submitting one or more work to Brood Film Fest 2016 you confirm that:

• you have read, understood, agree with and/or will adhere to all of these rules and terms;
• you are authorised to submit the film(s) submitted above for Brood Film Fest 2016, you have permission to do so from any distributor(s) or sales agent(s) representing the film and you have obtained permission for the inclusion of copyrighted music and/or image(s) in the film(s);
• you have the authority and all rights necessary for the unlimited screening of your film(s) at Exeter Phoenix’ cinema and online at any file-sharing site selected by Digital Institute for Early Parenthood;
• you nor any party on your behalf are entitled to claim rental or other fees for screening your work(s) at Exeter Phoenix or online at any file-sharing site selected by Digital Institute for Early Parenthood;
• you are licencing Brood Film Fest and the Digital Institute for Early Parenthood to use and present your work and stills/footage thereof, free of charge, for an unlimited period, for reasonable and related promotional, educational, screening and fundraising purposes including (but not exclusive to) any online and printed marketing and PR activity through which your work may appear on press releases, posters, flyers, programmes, websites, social media platforms, exhibition brochures, handouts, etc.; on any education/learning materials/events at previews, screenings, conferences, education centres, other venues and online; any printed/online exhibition/project catalogue(s)/publication(s) that may be produced and sold by the Digital Institute for Early Parenthood at venue(s), other locations and online to raise funds for Brood Film Fest’s and/or DIEP’s development;
• you understand and agree that the £15 submission fee is non-refundable.
• you understand and agree these Rules & Terms may be subject to change.
