- films crafted with artistry, despite what seams may show through.
- genre conventions thoughtlessly reiterated, losing all context of their original meaning.

What's your Genre?

The Threadbare Mitten Film Festival is a celebration of genre cinema, here in the tell-tale heart of Michigan.

We won't push you into a box:
Horror, Sci-Fi, Contemporary Western, Neo-Noir, Absurdist Comedy, Fantasy, Splatterpunk, Magical Realism, Creature Feature, Psychological Thriller, Modern Samurai, ZomRomCom, Exploitation and Grindhouse, Road Trip, Experimental and Non-Narrative... whatever weird quirks spark your camera rolling, we want to give you an exhibition home to exorcise them with an appreciative audience.
(and if being pushed into a box is your thing, well ok, show us that!)

We do not categorize submissions by genre, only by duration. We will program screening blocks based upon the characteristics of the selected films themselves.

Downtown Charlotte will host this two-day festival, starting with a Friday Night Premiere on the largest screen in town at the historic Eaton Theatre and a VIP Party for filmmakers and friends at the Secret Ballroom. Screenings will run all day Saturday at the Windwalker Underground Art Gallery, intermixed with Filmmaker Q&As and Discussions, leading up to a special Drive-In style Double Feature in the city lot behind the venues. Jury and Audience Awards will be presented that evening.

Located halfway between Battle Creek and Lansing on I-69, Charlotte offers many restaurants, coffee shops, and a craft brewery, with local hotels available for festival attendees. The Mid-Michigan region offers the curious endless attractions and world-class beers within an easy highway drive in any direction.

Rules & Terms

Exhibition Formats:

Films selected for the Threadbare Mitten Film Festival must provide exhibition copies to the festival coordinators at least 1 week prior to the festival dates.

Films selected for Regular screening at the Windwalker Underground Gallery or the Drive-In screening must provide a digital screener in standard .mp4 format or equivalent. Please mail a flashdrive or SD card containing the file to our submission address.

Films selected for the Opening Night Premier at the Eaton Theatre must provide a physical Blu-Ray or DVD disc compatible with standard disc players to the submission address. Upon notification of selection, we will inform you if your film has been selected for screening at the Eaton Theatre. If you are unable to provide a playable disc, please notify us immediately. Your film will still screen as a digital copy at another venue, and an alternate film will be selected for the Eaton Theatre. It is your responsibility to confirm proper disc playback.

While we will not impose content restrictions for submitted films, please consider the following:

1. We are not interested in purely pornographic material, nor any actual acts of real life violence.

2. The Drive-In screening will be in a public space, so the films selected for this single screening will conform to roughly PG-13 content standards.

1. The Threadbare Mitten Film Festival (the FESTIVAL) will only accept original works. (no fan-films)

a) By submitting your film to the FESTIVAL, you assert that you are authorized to submit the film, and that you own (or have legal permission to use) the copyright to all submitted materials, including the soundtrack and on-screen imagery. The FESTIVAL assumes no liability for any potential claims, damages, judgments, and expenses against any submitted film.

b) By submitting your film, you grant permission to the FESTIVAL to publicly exhibit the film during the festival dates, and to share imagery, copy, and audio/visual clips from the film for promotional purposes, including the promotion of future events.

2. Electronic submissions are preferred. We encourage you to provide any available electronic promotional/publicity materials at the time of submission. Upon notification of selection by the FESTIVAL, the submitter of Short and Feature category films must provide at minimum a film trailer, poster, and synopsis.

3. For physical copy submissions, please email prior to submission. Physical submissions will not be returned.

4. All submissions must be in English or contain English subtitles.

5. Judging is anonymous and arbitrary. FESTIVAL judge decisions are final.

6. We do not require any particular Premiere status for General screenings, though we aim to offer Michigan Premieres for our opening night at the Eaton Theatre. Premiere status will be considered as one part of the overall submission for all screenings.

7. Filmmakers whose work is selected will receive 2 VIP passes to the FESTIVAL.

Excellent communication from the organisers, prompt, clear and friendly. And Dan forgave me for not attending due to the whole me living several thousand miles away thing :) Because of that I can't really rate the Networking aspect but judging by the pictures I've seen it looks to have been a cracking event. Good work, people!

My review is mainly based on communication. I wasn't able to attend the festival because my town (Midland, MI) was under flood watch. Still, I felt the organizers did a great job communicating with filmmakers. I hope this ends up being an annual festival because that would be good for Michigan filmmakers and for Charlotte, MI! We were pleased to have two Delta College films accepted to be screened.

I was not able to attend, but I can say my experience with Threadbare Mitten Film Festival was great. I was pleased with the communication of the festival. It was very easy to contact them and they were very responsive. They posted trailers and posters of the selected films on their Facebook page which was awesome.

Overall, the festival looked very fun and I am very honored to have my film selected. I would submit another film to this festival in the future. Hopefully, the crew and I can attend next time.

This is a great festival and I wish you all good luck for next year!
