Screenplays of interactive fiction work in VR
No screenplay for material that lasts more than 30 minutes (maximum linear length) will be accepted for our “screenplay of interactive fiction work in immersive VR“ category.
Submissions must explain in detail both a tree view of the possible narratives and the details of each possible scene.
Interactivity must integrate Virtelio technology. Virtelio is an award-winning software for Mac & PC that enables anyone to create and experience interactive 360° movies of the future.

DATES
• May 18th - The competition is officially announced at the Cannes Film Festival
• July 5th - The rules and regulations are published. Opening day for submissions
• September 15th - Final day for submissions
• September 30th - The 10 selected projects are announced
• November 14th - Official opening of the Paris Courts Devant festival
• November 19th - New screens & VR Day (booking required)
• November 21st - The winners is announced during the closing ceremony.
CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
1. Only production companies, as legal entities, can enter the competition.
2. Each competing production company can enter a maximum of two projects, provided they pay the registration fees for both projects.
3. Production companies must have complied with copyright law and paid royalties for the submitted pieces of work.
4. Applicants must fill in the participation form and submit their completed project to the Competition Organiser via the FilmFreeway platform, by September 15th.
5. This is an international competition. The submitted files must be written in English or in French.
6. Should they be selected, applicants who have submitted a file in French shall provide the competition with a file translated in English, a fortnight after the selection was announced.
7. Should they be selected, the applicants must be able to be present in Paris, either personally or by proxy, and attend various meetings and presentations, set forth in the schedule, between November 14th and November 21st, at their own expense.
8. The project submitted to the competition will have to meet the following criteria:
• Length: 30 minutes maximum
• Format: Unit
• Genre: fiction, docudrama, cinematographic documentary
• Image: 360° live action, CGI or VR animation
APPLICATION DOCUMENT
The application document (A4 format, one PDF file only) must include the following documents:
As a minimum
1. The submission form (downloadable from the website)
2. The concept (pitch, synopsis)
3. A complete screenplay, or conversational continuity of all scenes, including alternative interactive scenes (typed in Arial, Verdana or Courier, body 12, spacing 1,5).
4. An artistic briefing note (including narrative concept, tone, visual choices, mood board, characters, cast, postproduction information, etc.)
5. The author’s curriculum vitae
6. A presentation of the production company that submits the project.
If applicable:
7. A note indicating the technical options under consideration
8. The curriculum vitae of the possible director, if he/she is not the author.
9. A filmography with links to the author’s and/or the director’s previous work.
10. A production note and a funding plan for the movie.
11. Any useful information to understand the project’s outline.
RIGHTS
- All participants guarantee that the project submitted to the Competition Organiser and the jury for this competition does not directly and indirectly infringe on any third-party rights.
- All participants ensure the Competition Organiser that they own – without any restriction or reservation – the rights to make use of the work they present in any regard necessary for the competition.
- Should the information provided to submit a project be incomplete or incorrect, or should someone who does not meet the requirements for the competition submit a project, the submission will be considered null and void.
- Any submission that does not meet the aforementioned conditions (length, description of the project) will not be accepted.
- Neither the project nor the participant may have either personal or professional relations to any member of the jury, to any member of the Courts Devant organisation or to any partner of the operation.
THE SELECTION COMMITTEE
The selection committee will gather cinema professionals who are familiar with new types of storytelling and/or virtual reality (screenwriters, directors, producers, comedian, technician, etc.).
The list of the members of the committee will not be disclosed. However, each of the partners of the competition will be represented by one member.
The selection committee’s decision is final. The decision cannot be challenged and no explanation for said decision will be provided.
THE OFFICIAL SELECTION
The selection committee will choose 10 projects among of all the projects submitted to the competition.
They will pay attention, particularly to:
1. The interest, inventiveness and originality of the project.
2. Its adaptation to the specificities of VR, and its ability to respect the constraints of immersive VR and to exploit the possibilities of that technology
3. Its cinematographic quality
4. Its feasibility
5. whether interactivity is used as an asset (whether it be consciously or not) in the narration and the viewer’s experience
These 10 projects will constitute the official selection of the competition, which will then be submitted to the JURY.
THE JURY
The jury, which the Paris Courts Devant festival puts together, is still being decided upon.
The jury will include:
- Jan Kounen, director, President
- Clément Cogitore, director
- Amira Casar, actress (with reservations)
- Dounia Sichov, actress
- Elisha Karmitz, CEO of mk2
- Myriam Achard, Film Fund Luxembourg
- Etc.
The jury’s decision is final.
The decision cannot be challenged and no explanation for said decision will be provided.
AWARD
The jury and the Competition Organiser will officially announce the prize-winner(s) on November 21st, during Paris Courts Devant’s closing ceremony at the mk2 Bibliothèque.
The Competition Organiser will inform the winner of the results in person over the phone or by email 3 days before the ceremony.
RULES AND REGULATIONS
- All submissions shall be made via FilmFreeway’s platform to the exclusion of any other means
- Submission require the payment of an entry fee
90$ for an early bird ticket
120$ for a regular ticket
150$ for a late submission
- Entry fees are non-refundable
- To be submitted to the competition the work does not have to be new or unreleased (it can have been screened in other festivals, writing competitions, etc.)
- The project manager must have filled in the submission form fully.
Beware! The details given during the registration will be those used on various festival material including programmes, should the film be selected for the competition. The festival will not be held accountable of any mistake caused by incorrect information on the registration form.
- The Paris Courts Devant festival expressly guarantee not to disclose the links and passwords sent by the team, and not to use them for any purpose other than that of the selection process.
- Should the work be selected, the project manager will be contacted by our team by phone and/or email in September.
- Should the work not be selected, the project manager will be informed by email in September.
- Once selected, no project can be withdrawn from the programme.
- The project manager guarantees that he/she owns the rights to broadcast, music, sounds, concepts, texts, etc. included in the work.
- The beneficiaries give the broadcasting rights on any future work for any public screening during the Paris Courts Devant Festival.
- The beneficiaries of any work that features on the festival’s list of prize-winners accept that Paris Courts Devant broadcasts their movies free of charge as part of three free screenings showing reruns of the winning prizes for the purpose of promoting the prize-winners.
- The Festival shall have the right to use short extracts and/or pictures of the work in printed communication tools or any other medium, only as part of the promotion of the festival.
- Any decision made by Paris Courts Devant for the competition is final. The decision cannot be challenged and no explanation for said decision will be provided.
VIDEO LIBRARY
- The applicant agrees that the work be broadcast on our viewing stations for the whole duration of the festival and/or be added to our private online video library for up to 6 months after the festival, for professional purpose only. Access to the video library is strictly private and limited to accredited professionals only.
- Should a project be selected, the beneficiary grants Paris Courts Devant the right to download the material (via the viewing link) so it may be embedded in the festival’s video library.
AGREEMENT
To submit a project or a work to the Paris Courts Devant international short films festival the project manager must accept all the rules and regulations hereinabove.

RÈGLEMENT DU CONCOURS
Scénarios de films interactifs en réalité virtuelle
Sont éligibles dans notre catégorie « scénario de films interactifs en réalité virtuelle » des scénarios d’œuvres audiovisuelles de 30 minutes maximum interactives (durée linéaire maximum possible) détaillant à la fois l’arborescence narrative et le détail de chacune des scènes possibles.
L’interactivité doit intégrer la technologie Virtelio.

CONDITIONS DE PARTICIPATION
1. Seules les sociétés de production, en tant que personnes morales, peuvent concourir.
2. Les sociétés candidates peuvent déposer deux projets maximum, à condition d’acquitter les droits d’inscription des deux projets.
3. Les sociétés de productions doivent être en règle concernant les droits d’auteurs des œuvres soumises au concours.
4. Les sociétés candidates doivent remplir le formulaire de participation et soumettre un Dossier de candidature complet à l’Organisateur du Concours via la plateforme FilmFreeway, le 15 septembre 2017 au plus tard.
5. Le concours est international. Les dossiers déposés doivent être rédigés en anglais ou en français.
6. En cas de sélection, les participants ayant déposé un dossier en langue française devront obligatoirement fournir un dossier traduit en langue anglaise quinze jours après l’annonce de la sélection.
7. En cas de sélection, chaque candidat doit pouvoir être présent ou représenté à Paris à plusieurs reprises, la semaine du 14 au 21 novembre 2017, au différents rendez-vous suivant le calendrier indiqué, à ses frais.
8. Le projet soumis au concours devra répondre aux critères suivant :
– Durée : 30 minutes maximum
– Format : unitaire
– Genre : fiction, docu-fiction, documentaire de création
– Image : prise de vue réelle à 360°, CGI ou animation en réalité virtuelle.
DOSSIER DE CANDIDATURE
Le dossier de candidature (au format A4, en un seul fichier .pdf) doit comprendre les éléments ci-dessous :

1. Le concept (pitch, synopsis)
2. Un scénario intégral, ou continuité dialoguée de toutes les scènes, y compris les scènes alternatives (Composé en Arial, Verdana ou Courier, corps 12, interligne 1,5).
3. Une note d’intention artistique (le concept narratif, le ton, les choix visuels, mood-board, les personnages, le casting, la postproduction, etc.).
4. Un curriculum vitae de l’auteur.
5. Une présentation de la société de production porteuse du projet.
Le cas échéant
6. Une note indiquant les options techniques envisagées.
7. Un curriculum vitae du réalisateur pressenti s’il n’est pas l’auteur.
8. Une filmographie avec des liens vers les précédentes œuvres de l’auteur et/ou du réalisateur.
9. Une note de production et un plan de financement du film.
10. Tous éléments permettant de comprendre les contours du projet.
DROITS
– Tous les participants garantissent que les œuvres soumises à l’Organisateur du Concours et au jury pour ce concours ne violent directement et indirectement aucun droit de tiers.
– Tout participant garantit à l’Organisateur du Concours qu’il dispose sans restriction ni réserve des droits permettant l’exploitation de la création qu’il présente dans le cadre du présent dispositif.
– Toute inscription incomplète, erronée ou toute inscription par une personne ne remplissant pas les conditions requises sera considérée comme nulle.
– Tout dossier ne répondant pas aux conditions énoncées ci-dessus (durée, descriptif du projet) ne sera pas pris en compte.
– Ni le projet ni le participant ne doivent présenter de lien professionnel avec un membre du jury, avec l’Association Courts Devant ou avec l’un ou l’autre des partenaires de l’opération.
DATES DU CONCOURS
• 18 mai Annonce officielle du concours au Festival de Cannes.
• 4 juillet Publication du règlement intérieur. Ouverture des inscriptions.
• 15 septembre Clôture des inscriptions
• 30 septembre Annonce des dix projets présélectionnés.
• 14 novembre Ouverture officielle du Festival Paris Courts Devant
• 19 novembre Journée de la VR et des nouveaux écrans (sous réserves).
• 21 novembre Annonce des lauréats lors de la cérémonie de clôture
LE COMITÉ DE SÉLECTION
Le comité de sélection sera composé de professionnels du cinéma familiers des nouvelles écritures et/ou de la réalité virtuelle (scénariste, réalisateur, producteur, comédien, technicien, etc).
Sa composition ne sera pas rendue publique. Il intègrera toutefois un membre de chacun des partenaires du concours.
Le comité de sélection a toute souveraineté de jugement.
Ses décisions ne seront ni motivées, ni susceptibles de recours.
SÉLECTION OFFICIELLE
Le comité de sélection choisira 10 projets parmi tous ceux soumis au concours.
Il prendra en compte notamment :
1. L’intérêt, l’inventivité et l’originalité du projet.
2. Son adaptation aux spécificités, et son aptitude à respecter les contraintes et exploiter les potentialités de la réalité virtuelle immersive
3. Sa dimension « cinématographique »
4. Sa faisabilité
5. Il considéra également l’apport de l’interactivité (consciente ou inconsciente) dans la narration et dans l’expérience du spectateur.
Ces 10 projets constitueront la sélection officielle du concours, qui sera ensuite soumise au JURY.
LE JURY
Le Jury, composé par le Festival Paris Courts Devant, est en cours de constitution.
Il se composera notamment de :

LE PALMARÈS
L’annonce officielle du palmarès sera faite par le jury et l’Organisateur du Concours le 21 novembre 2017, lors de la cérémonie de clôture du Festival Courts Devant au mk2 Bibliothèque
Le lauréat sera informé personnellement des résultats par l’Organisateur du Concours par téléphone ou par courrier électronique 3 jours avant la cérémonie.

- Les frais d’inscription ne sont pas remboursables.
- Pour être inscrite à la compétition, l’œuvre n’a pas besoin d’être inédite et peut avoir déjà circulé (festivals, concours d’écriture, etc).
- Le responsable du projet doit avoir renseigné intégralement la fiche d’inscription en ligne. Attention ! Les renseignements fournis lors de l’inscription sont ceux qui, dans l’éventualité d’une sélection en compétition, figureront dans les différents documents et programmes du festival. Le festival ne pourra être tenu responsable d’une erreur consécutive à un renseignement erroné dans la fiche d’inscription.
- Le festival Paris Courts Devant s’engage expressément à conserver la confidentialité des liens et mots de passe qui lui sont communiqués, et à les utiliser uniquement dans le cadre du processus de sélection
- En cas de sélection, le responsable de l’œuvre sera contacté par téléphone et/ou par mail par notre équipe, courant septembre
- En cas de non-sélection, le responsable de l’œuvre en sera avisé par mail courant septembre
- Une fois sélectionné, aucun projet ne peut être retiré du programme.
- Le responsable de l’œuvre certifie être titulaire des droits de diffusion des images, musiques, sons, concepts, textes, etc. prévus dans l’œuvre proposée.
- Les ayants-droits cèdent à Paris Courts Devant le droit de diffusion des œuvres futures pour toutes les projections publiques du Festival Paris Courts Devant.
- Les ayants-droits des œuvres figurant au palmarès du festival autorisent Paris Courts Devant à diffuser gracieusement leurs films dans le cadre de trois projections gratuites de reprise du palmarès destinées à le promouvoir
- Le Festival se réserve le droit d’utiliser de courts extraits et/ou des images de l’œuvre dans les outils de communication imprimés ou tout autre support de diffusion, uniquement dans le cadre de la promotion du festival.
- Toutes les décisions prises par Paris Courts Devant dans le cadre du présent concours sont définitives et non motivées.
VIDÉOTHÈQUE
- Le candidat accepte que l’œuvre soit diffusée sur nos postes de visionnage durant la durée du festival et/ou sur notre vidéothèque privée en ligne 6 mois après le festival, à des fins uniquement professionnelles. L’accès à la vidéothèque est strictement privé et réservé aux professionnels accrédités au festival.
- En cas de sélection, l’ayant droit autorise Paris Courts Devant à télécharger les ressources de l’œuvre (via le lien de visionnage) pour l’intégrer dans la vidéothèque du Festival.
ACCEPTATION DU RÈGLEMENT
Inscrire un projet ou une œuvre au Festival International de Courts Métrages Paris Courts Devant suppose l’entière acceptation du règlement ci-dessus.
