Director Biography - Gerhardt Reibstirn

All together the Creature Crew is made up of 8 friends from Media Design School in New Zealand. We got together due to similar interests and wanted to make something a bit unusual and mysterious. We spent 12 weeks bringing our little mushroom to life! We made everything from the first doodle on the whiteboard to this long awaited film festival application.

Director Statement

Fawn was an exercise in live integration, and a passion project of our team. We wanted to try something new, and during the pre-production phase, we settled on shooting Macro photography, and using live plate integration.

As shooting went on, emerging challenges of the macro photography pushed us to use some innovative solutions. For example, in order to capture the subtle motions of the forest floor, we resorted to time-lapse footage, which meant compositing and lighting the characters integration was a unique challenge due to the lights movement.

Fawn went through an enormous amount of research & development. We not only had to learn the skills but apply them artistically. The $0 budget was not a barrier, as we constructed clever ways to produce the film. The film was only limited by our imaginations and the deadline. The final film is a carefully selected and polished fraction of the pre-production material created.
