Director Biography - Leslie Rubiera

Leslie Rubiera es una directora y guionista dominicana. Es egresada de la carrera de Cine y Comunicación Audiovisual del Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC). Sus cortometrajes “Como Agua De Mayo” y “Nina” han sido exhibidos y premiados en múltiples festivales de cine nacionales e internacionales.

Director Statement

Para este cortometraje, tenía un deseo de explorar el apego al recuerdo de una persona, y de cómo a veces queremos preservarlo tan perfectamente que termina quedándose aislado dentro de una burbuja, perdiendo dentro de ella su contexto y nuestro criterio frente a la situación mayor a la que pertenece. Una fantasía que nos reconforta. Pero que si se alimenta demasiado, nos volvemos muy dependientes de ella.

El título del corto viene de la frase en francés "L'esprit de l'escalier", la cual describe la impotencia de no decir las palabras perfectas a tiempo en una conversación (especialmente en una discusión), y la frustración que le sigue cuando la repetimos una y otra vez, imaginando lo que pudo haber sido. Pienso que dentro de todo lo que conversa Elena con Gian, ella está tratando de decirle algo más, pero no encuentra las palabras perfectas. Y el gran apego a este recuerdo es debido a cierto arrepentimiento de no haberlas encontrado a tiempo.

For this short film, I had a desire to explore the attachment to the memory of someone, and how sometimes we want to preserve it so perfectly that it ends up isolated in a bubble, losing all context and our judgement of the larger situation that it belongs to. A comforting fantasy. But, if fed for too long, we can grow too dependent on it.

The title of the short film comes from the french phrase "L'esprit de l'escalier", which describes the impotent feeling of not finding the perfect words on time during a conversation (especially in a confrontation) and how we grow frustrated replaying in our minds how the outcome could've been different. I think that, under all that Elena is saying to Gian, she is trying to tell him something more, but can't find the perfect words. And that strong attachment to that memory is because of some sort of regret of not finding them on time.
