Born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 1992. Studied acting and directing at the world renowned Stella Adler Academy, after winning a full scholarship in 2011. EBRU is directed by the youngest female director Jennifer Merchant (23), who won for 'Best Director' at the Cinewomen FilmFest in Los Angeles. Her first film 'Two Strangers' (which raises awareness for youth homelessness) won the award for Best Message at the Meet Film Festival in Romania. EBRU is her second film and is shot by the Award winning and critically acclaimed cinematographer Eduardo Ramirez Gonzalez, known for the Golden Globe nominated TV series, Narcos.
EBRU is an educational short film. The EBRU© project addresses a very timely matter regarding the generation conflict or the cultural gap.
The main goal of the EBRU© project is to contribute to the identity development of young teenagers (mainly girls) who are growing up between two cultures.
Merchant Motion Pictures considers it of vital importance that youngsters know how to think as individuals and how to make their own choices, realizing that there are many prejudices as well as the fact that each human has their own set of moral views. With the EBRU© project we want to contribute to a (better) moral guidance for high school children.
The short film is developed along with teaching material to stimulate a healthy conversation about young Muslims growing up in the western society and to encourage all youngsters to talk about their experiences when it comes to finding their own voice.
I'm pleased to say that our minister of Culture and Education in the Netherlands has already given her support in our mission to educate the young teenagers regarding this timely matter. As such it is being presented/ screened in schools and colleges across the entire nation. (The Netherlands)
