Director Biography - Hashim Hashim

Hashim Hashim is an up & coming Yemeni filmmaker who’s produced & directed internationally acclaimed films. His films include ‘Girl of Scale’ (Nominated in the Salento Finibus Terrae, International Short Film Festival), ‘Blind Eyes’ (Winner of UNDP Human Rights Film Competition 2014) and ‘I Want My World as I See’ (first global winner in the 60 Seconds Film Festival).
Born in Sana’a, Yemen in 1984, Hashim is the youngest of six children. Even as a child, Hashim was drawn to the arts. Casting his friends and cousins, Hashim directed & acted in plays for adults. He carried on acting & directing through his school year. Winning a drawing competitions at a young age then cemented his belief that his future lay in creative and design projects. Upon completing high school, Hashim enrolled in a degree in Interior Architecture with the MARA University of Technology of Malaysian campus in Sana’a, Yemen. Hashim performed exceptionally well in the program and won the Dean’s list award for achievements multiple times. Hashim graduated winning the Vice Chancellor award.
Whilst in the program, he took up a course in Photography with a prominent Malaysian photographer. Hashim found himself thoroughly engaged on the subject and was riveted with the concept of communicating an idea or viewpoint though images. With the help of his photography teacher, he felt as if he was transported back to his younger days when he directed plays. Upon graduation, Hashim continued to build on his interests in photography and creative design. He worked on unique visual projects for local restaurants, office outlets and retail shops.
His start in film making came in 2009, when Hashim had the opportunity to participate in the first film completion in Yemen organized by the British Council. Given his limited skills in film making, Hashim was thoroughly surprised to find out that he won the competition. As the winner, he had the opportunity to study filmmaking & directing in Egypt. Here he collaborated with a team called HR Filmmakers with the aim to spread a positive image of Yemen globally through innovative media engagement. HR produced a documentary film on a women’s development program that was designed by women called Springboard.
This experience encouraged him and his creative team produce a twenty-minute film titled ‘Misconception’ as a reflection of religion & identity and the strong correlation between the two in Yemen. The success of the film in international festival further inspired Hashim to take bigger and larger projects.

In 2013, he embarked on a journey to build up his own team of artists to be able to work towards his vision. Thus the creation of his own professional production company called Dot Notion; that specializes in film and advertising in general. Hashim and his team have accomplished many projects since. Today he focuses on projects that leave strong positive messages and facilitate change & community improvement through a shift in mindsets.
