“downnup”
Internationally acclaimed California sculptor Peter Shelton takes us on a creative adventure guiding us through the conception, fabrication and installation of his sixteen-foot-tall bronze sculpture “downnup”. This is a rare opportunity to watch a leading contemporary artist develop a work of art.
From its beginnings as a wall of drawings where the concept of two opposing abstract figures is presented as a series of interconnected gestures, we follow the transformation into three dimensions. A cardboard, steel and foam substructure morphs into intertwining plaster figures. From the fires of casting and the final assembly of bronze parts, the form and gestures of these figures are fully realized.
Directed by documentarian Daniel Zimbaldi and filmed by James Mulryan, this film expertly translates the beauty and detail of this work of art into the horizontal frame of cinema.
Narrated by the artist with comments by art collector Garna Muller and Kathryn Kanjo, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, “downnup” condenses the intense energy of artistic production into an inspiring journey of art making at its finest.

I have followed the sculptures of Peter Shelton for decades and observed them in outdoor public environments as well as museum galleries. When he mentioned that he was about to begin a commission for this 16 foot tall bronze "downnup", I thought this was the perfect opportunity to reveal the marriage between the conceptual creative process and complex engineering demands necessary to actually make these creations come to life.
