Director Biography - Daniel Alexander Edelen

A filmmaking obsessive, Daniel Edelen frequently finds himself particularly enamoured by stories that use the medium of motion pictures to its greatest potential. He sees it as a unique and exclusive opportunity to describe something indescribable, and it is in this view that all of his projects are born. Through unusual technical concepts and ideas, Daniel seeks to tell stories that capture the human experience in ways only film can.

Thanks in large part to his attendance at Shoreline Community College and his deep involvement with the University of Washington's film clubs, where Daniel once made short films through video games and Lego stopmotion, he now has the privilege to work hands-on with other people that have the same drive as himself.

Early in his life, Daniel's father, an audio engineer, gave him the technical knowledge and resources to familiarize himself with audio as well as video, while his mother taught him the artistry and respect of writing and storytelling. Now, Daniel believes movies to be virtually anything and everything, but he also firmly believes that first they are sound, pictures, and creativity. In everything he creates, he aims to make the most of all three.

Director Statement

I drink a lot of coffee, and I stay up way too late. I'm not physically fit, and I don't eat like I should. I brag about these things; I'm proud of them. This is me, and it is so many others.

Why are we proud of such self-destruction?

"...post" aims to address this question as it relates to my own life, and how I view work culture in America, and particularly the film industry, which is all too familiar with the glorification of self-destruction in the name of personal endeavors. This industry not only makes it incredibly hard not to overwork yourself, but it seemingly looks upon self-care with disdain. I resent that, and yet I find myself an active contributor to that lifestyle.

When I was growing up in small town, Montana, I delivered and advertised newspapers as a nice way to pull together some humble income while attending middle school. That was my first experience really feeling the seemingly innate desire within us all to be someone "great", so it feels very appropriate that this story should be my first foray into this complex and personal theme.

As almost a cry for help, I hoped that by making this film, I would be able to diminish or even outright conquer that addiction to self-destruction in myself, and possibly others too. While I now see how extraordinarily ironic that thought process is, I still find myself endlessly fascinated by the pursuit all the same.
